Hello folks,

First of all there are two types:

1) Religious Ceremony under Hindu Marriage Act

2) Civil Ceremony under Special Marriage Act

Here are my Background info:

1) Day 1 - Arrived in Delhi

2) Day 3 - Got the NOC from the US Embassy

3) Day 4 - Got married the next day, it was Religious ceremony

4) After few days, We applied for the marriage certificate and We got the marriage certificate in 1 day.

On many website, it says, we have to wait 30 days IF! married by Civil Ceremony. It doesn't say that for the Religious Ceremony.

http://newdelhi.usembassy.gov/service/other-citizen-services/marriage.html

My question:

a) Since we went with Religious ceremony, We applied for the Marriage Certificate and we got the marriage certificate in 1 day. We did not have to wait 30 days. Is this correct?

Will i have problem during interview process? Will they ask us, drill us on how we got the marriage certificate so soon/1 day etc...? Are we okay? :innocent: Just want to be 100% sure that those who go with Religious Ceremony (Hindu Marriage Act) don't have to wait 30 days.

Comments? any thoughts?

Thank you in advance :-)

I was in a similar situation to you. We got a Religious Ceremony in Delhi and then hired an agent to get our Marriage Certificate.

I went to get my marriage certificate 8th day after our Religious Ceremony.

With regards to the actual application, we applied for the marriage certificate and received it on the same day of application.

We submitted our marriage certificate and there were no problems with it during NVC processing or during the Embassy Interview (Delhi).

I think you will be fine.

No getting marriage certificate in 1 day would not be problem at all. I think Indian govt is improving atleast in these offices.

I got mine from Mumbai in like 3 days no issues at interview or anywhere and got couple of duplicates on the spot. (for which I had to make sure clerk was happy)….:)not a big issue.

Ok good to know guys.

Also i realize under Hindu marriage act, it does not say to wait 30 days.

in any case, i think i'll be fine.

thanks for the peace of mind

Downside now is that i don't have many original copies if they ask for originals. Just one which i made color copies of.

I guess i'll have no choice but to provide my original and hope they'll return at the interview.

You only get 1 original and then you can make photo copies and get it attested any lawyer / advocate would attest it.

Other option is you can ask the clerk in registrar office and he can make couple duplicates for u, most likely he would ask for his cut.

When you say ask the clerk in Registrar office?

Do you mean at the court? or at the other location where they give the Marriage Certificate?

Finally, can you please elaborate on the "advocate"? Who can that be?

I got two copies given to us by the court. They gave it to us automatically. Maybe you can get another from the court if you really need it, but one should be enough for your purposes right now.

I think the "advocate" is the agent who helps you get the MC in Indian courts. Usually it is pretty difficult to get a MC or something else from the courts in India by yourself, so you have to use an agent.

You have to send your original marriage certificate to the NVC and they will give it back to you on the day of the interview at the Embassy.

We got our marriage certificate in five days or so. Civil ceremony under Special Marriage Act in Calcutta.

My mom paid about Rs. 500 and we got eight duplicates for the visa process. She framed the 'original' one.

Advocate is the lawyer british term, they normally have their boths outside the major courts and they would stamp and sign the photocopies stateing they have verfied photopies have not been atlered and once they sign it photocopy becomes truecopy.

In Mumbai one does not go to Court for Marriage or Marriage certificate but one goes to Marriage Registrar's office and they can get you married or issue you a marriage certificate based on your Hindu Ceremony.

Most of these places have clerks working for them, if you get hold of one of those guys, they would do all these kinda work of getting the duplicates under the table etc.

If you go by actual process it is painful to get the duplicate copies, like they would not issue you duplicate unless you get a police report your original got lost etc.

Really?? 1 day, 5 days?

Now I am suffering from no marriage certificate and having had an (only now I know it is) legal marriage ceremony.

We had our ceremony and immediately applied for the certificate. It was never granted because my flight was 20 days away; they required 35 or so (due to weekends). We paid the clerk an extra rs. 100 to cut it to 30 days from 60.

The standard process in Bangalore:

The first 30 days - publish it locally in case someone objects.

Marriage certificate clerk enters application into computer.

Government only sends certificate to local office.
