On Tripadvisor, a guy was complaining that he stayed in the Diamond or Sofitel (not sure which) on Roxas Blvd towards the Embassy. He said he couldn't find a metered cab for 20 minutes and all the cabs wanted to charge him $ 35.00 ( 1,470 peso ) to the airport. Is this true that a cab ride is that expensive at times ?

I want a nice hotel and I might book at the Mariott by the airport but that is $ 200 per night which makes me pause. If I try to go to another nice hotel on Roxas Blvd near the Embassy will the savings get eaten up in cab fares ?

I have no problem spending $ 100 a night and I don't want to be in a shady area where there might be beggars. I guess I am just a spoiled American :bonk: which I appologize for in advance of your comments.

The meter should always be on. if they already charge you without turning on the meter or before you get in the taxi, get out. That's illegal. The company can lose their franchise lease for that. They do that because they already know what will be the meter rate and they are charging you twice. Give them a tip if you want but the meter should be on.

Get the plate number and the taxi comapny's name. It doesn't fly with me. and Sofitel is an expensive hotel sure they must have airport service.

Also, pick taxis like MGE, E&E and R&E. Some taxi companies use meter but their meter got a "magic".

For taxis from the airport (yellow ones), their flagdown rate (not sure about the succeeding charge) is more expensive but there's still a meter.

Ask the hotel if they have airport service. Most of them got it. Some are free some are not.

Let the buyer beware. A cab ride is only as expensive as you allow it to be. If you take an unmetered cab ride, you need to agree on the price before you take off. I would never pay anything close to $35 for a cab ride to the airport from anywhere in the greater Manila area. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't pay that much for a private car and driver either.

If you are thinking of staying at the Marriot, then I'm sure you would enjoy staying at the Hyatt Hotel and Casino in Malate. It's under $200 per night and it's first rate. It's close to the U.S. Embassy, St. Lukes, and Robinsons. Also, you won't have a problem with unmetered cabs at the Hyatt. The Hyatt notes which cab you take each time you leave by taxi. I think the cabbies know better than to mess with the Hyatt.

By the way, many hotels, including the Hyatt Hotel and Casino, have their own shuttles to and from the airport. I can't remember the price, but the Hyatt charged us a reasonable rate for their shuttle service.

Chinook and I hired a car and driver at times for short trips while we were in Manila. It was a bit more expensive than taking a taxi, but it was also more comfortable traveling in an air-conditioned SUV with a professional driver. It was still a bargain by American standards. Of course, it was considerably more expensive when we hired a car and driver for an entire day.

Now, its been a couple years since I've been to the PHL, but the most I can ever remember paying from the airport to an airport in the Malate area was 700 peso. From my wife's apartment in Makati was usually more like 500.

How much time does it take to get to the airport from the Hyatt to the airport -> 30, 20 minutes or 15 minutes (like at 11 PM or 5 Am in the morning).

Also, pick taxis like MGE, E&E and R&E. (what color are these taxis !!!! Yellow.. white ? Lol. That's easier for uneducated Americans)

By the way, I am excited about my trip to Alona beach in Bohol at the Amorita. Picture me here in January. Never been there. Should be nice.

It's been a while since we traveled from the Hyatt Hotel and Casino to the airport but, at those hours, I'd say it would take a maximum of 20-30 minutes.

We enjoyed the view from the 20th and the 23rd floor of the Hyatt-- Manila and Manila Bay. :star:

PS...Nice beach!

All this noise about the taxi drivers...

We (only) stayed at the Diamond while in Manila. We walked out the front door, the boys hailed us a taxi, we got in and we went. We reached our destination and we paid. That simple.

OK...after reading your post...I asked asawa ko...what went on that I did not know about. Well....turns out....asawa ko took control and told the drivers.."turn on the meter and shut up"... :)

I s'pose that sums it up. :star:

Our ride from Airport to the embassy was about 250p. My fiancee just got back from her medical and and they charged her 560p from airport to the embassy. So let the buyer beware!!!! By the way, we stayed at the Casa Bocobo just 1 block from St Lukes. New, nice and simple for $40 per night.
