I'm going to the gun store right after work today. Then on Sunday I'm shooting 3-gun. Huzzah!

We have been having beautiful weather here and spent most of yesterday at the gun club. The skeet fields are open again  and the leagues start April 5!!! I used my new "man's day" gift the Russian O/U sporting clays gun and did quite well with it. Alla shot skeet a little then went to the rifle range. There was a guy there shooting a "G David Tubb" special from Les Baer Arms. It is a .308 bolt rifle built on an AR10 platform, often called a "space gun" Alla was fascinated by this "weapon" mostly because the anodized aluminum frame was bright green. Alla had acquired some clay pidgeons from the skeet field and set them up on the target frame at 100 yds and proceeded to smash them with her rifle, firing in the standing and sitting position. Mor often that not when she fired, one of the clay targets disappeared.

After shooting all afternoon, she changed clothes to a strapless jumper to go "walk downtown" and was sporting a noticeable bruise on her left shoulder from firing her shotgun. she is such a wienie  "Who gets a bruise from a 28ga....semi auto?" She said "If anyone says anything I will tell them you beat me"

Yep a lefty and she loves her right handed bolt rifle (those are not reversed images in her photos) she reaches over the top with her trigger to operate the bolt. The semi auto is not trouble for her but she has now expressed an interest in a 28 ga CZ O/U.

I just viewed the pictures again to confirm. Yep, she's a witch. Burn her at the stake!

Everyone is supposed to be right handed.

In my professional opinion (take that for whatever it's worth!) she'd probably be better served using her right hand to work the bolt. Typically the trigger hand (in her case, the left) is used to work the bolt - even for lefties - but with the scope on that rifle being so high and her position being such that she has to reach waaaaaaaay over, I'm guessing she also has to lift her head off the stock each time as well.

I see she can shoot well already, but if she could hone the technique slightly, I bet she could shrink those groups down even more, and probably get a little bit faster follow-up shots as well.

If she could keep her face planted on the stock (and more importantly, eye centered in the scope throughout her group) then she'll fire smaller groups because she won't have to "move around so much" between each shot. She should use her right hand to work the bolt (assuming the throw isn't long enough to hit her face) and never remove her face from the stock or finger from the trigger (hold it back the whole time) at all.

Then, she should move that right arm back under her left arm and/or the buttstock. It's possible to use the support hand/arm for subtle changes in elevation.

With practice, she could work the bolt with the right hand, move it back under her left arm, and then exhale/adjust elevation all within the same breath as she lets out on the trigger. Once fully exhaled, verify aim, adjust if needed, then take the next shot. Follow-up shots would be under three seconds each and the whole group would be in about 10-15 seconds.

I know she covers a dime already and that's awesome shooting. But there's always room to improve!

*disclaimer - if she's not raising her head on each shot then don't apply any of this. However, if she breaks that cheek weld and "checks" her shots or has to get out of the way to reach over, then try the other hand. She's going to fight you on it and say, "I like doing it this way." But, if you can get her to do it "slim's way" she'll shoot just a little better because it's smoother.

Have fun with that!

Not possible. Alla is actually not left handed, she is right handed but has a physical disability in her right arm and hand which renders it rather difficult to do anything with that hand/arm. She has trained herself to be left handed because of this (since childhood) so unfortunately she is more or less "stuck" with being left handed. I offered to get her a left handed rifle but there were none she liked or thought "looked good" It is at least as important to her that the gun "look good" and match her purse and shoes. She is otherwise a pretty serious shooter. She is also not too concerned with fast follow up shots. she is very diliberate. When shooting from prone or sitting she does not even use the magazine, she just single loads each round. For standing she uses the magazine. If you ever notice at a match, experienced shooters do the same thing.

she has become excellent at "calling her shots" and she knows when she lets a bad one go, even at 100 yards. This has done nothing for her usual demeanor of never saying "bad words"

She really mounts and handles the rifle very well. You can tell immediately she is experienced an comfortable with a rifle, you know the look, you can tell immediately when someone is comfortable with guns. She is. She mounts and "slings up" very smoothly. Damn, she LOOKS good doing it.

Now to get her just as comfortable with skeet.

LMFAO!!!

Check out this thread James and you will learn a lot. Like any long running RUB thread it wanders around, spins off on tangents and comes back to the center every so often. But it is precisely accurate since..well, have you ever asked a Ukrainian woman "How are you today?" It will take her MORE than today to tell you!

It should probably be pinned T-Bone.
I am honored, si man ("honoured, si man, eh" if in Canadia, si man eh, or "oui, man" if in Quebec, which is not always exactly Canadia, no man).

Write the Admiral with that pinning request, si man, or sweet-talk Charles into doing so. wheedle man.
