That cop doesn't know Colorado law then!

You can use a foreign license in CO for 90 days max. After that you need to obtain a CO license. Unfortunately for many of us who take the K1 route, you won't get your EAD within 90 days of entry, so you have two options: Stop driving until your EAD arrives and you can get a CO license, or keep driving and hope for the best. Most people seem to choose the latter, but it's risky. Looking back, if I'd have been in an accident after the 90 day point, I sincerely doubt my wife's insurer (it was her car) would have paid out.

Who knows but that works for me as I can't see myself siting at home all day.... he also told me that they see A LOT of people driving with fakes mexican DL so I guess as long as I have a real one is not too bad haha....

Luckily my husband was able to add me (and my car) to his car insurance with my old CO DL so I am not too worried about it, plus I'm not a bad driver and have never been in an accident (knocking wood) :P

Hi everyone!

I stopped at the DMV office for info on my DL. They told me that once I receive my SSN card I can apply for a TX driver's licence with my EAD.

And there's no need for a test at all, not even the written test. That was pleasent to hear.

Thank you guys, hopefully I was able to clear some things up for you as well.

According to the DPS* website only licenses from France, Canada, or Germany have the tests waived. http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/DriverLicense/movingtotexas.htm

Thing is, you can tell an insurance company anything you want when you sign up. But if you have an accident, they'll find out your CO license is expired, and they'll use that to not pay out. They'll use any excuse, and that really is a pretty good one. At the moment, I'd be very surprised if the insurance premium to add you and your car to your husband's policy wasn't utterly worthless.

You may be "not a bad driver" but out of interest can you tell me the make, model and colour of the car you drive? I'll give them a WIDE berth from now on!!

Totally agree on the misconception people have that there is an international driver's license that gives driving privileges.

Insurance: In Texas where he lives, if the car is insured by wife, then she can give her permission for anybody to drive it and it is covered. Showing the car is insured will get him past the driving test. Cars are insured, not the people driving them. He should be added to the policy if he becomes a regular driver of the car. It shouldn't cost anymore money to add a driver to an insured car unless he's a male under 25. At least that's how my State Farm in Texas works--no hike in insurance when I added my husband as a named driver.

Here in Illinois Allstate told me they needed her DL to add her to the insurance and was automatically protected since I was in the car when she had her learner's permit. All states vary.

I asked one of our officers here in our ER about international liscenses. He showed me a little "view-finder" type of card that he can use to view the hidden stuff on liscenses. He showed me one on another employee's liscense to demonstrate. He can tell if it is legit or not. He told me that there is no problem with foreigners driving here as tourists or temporary workers.

The DOT (Department of Transportation in Texas) website is confusing in that there is a list of who, with what kinds of jobs, can drive. Pilots, for example always can. Actors, too. Each state has its own specific laws.

One of my friends was the passenger in either Georgia or Tennessee when they were pulled over. The driver was arrested for driving without a valid liscence. He had an international one and his Mexican liscence. (They work all over the world and he's driven in over 10 countries.) My friend completely freaked out and was contemplating refusing all other job assignments in the US versus obtaining a liscence in one state or another. Residency is the problem--he doesn't "live" in any one place more than 4 weeks at a time. In Houston, you have to have an appointment that may be weeks in the future for your in-car test.

Anyone who does elect to drive without a local liscense, do it like you are 80. Keep it slow and keep it over-safe. :)

Hi there!

I have a valid driver's licence from my country of origin, everything on it is also translated in English. I recently received my EAD and applied for a SSN today.

Can I drive with my driver's licence or do I have to go by the DMV and get a new test?

Thank you in advance.

I had the same question (I live in Ohio); this was the answer from the BMV

The status in which you enter the country will determine whether or not you may drive on your Belgian driver license without being required to purchase an Ohio driver license.

As a visitor to the United States you may drive with your Belgian driver license along with the international driver license for up to one year. As a visitor you would not qualify to obtain an Ohio driver license.

A status other than visitor will require you to obtain an Ohio driver license.

The basic documents you will be required to present are your Belgian driver license, international driver license, visa, valid passport and I-94, along with proof of Ohio residency and proof of Social Security number, if one has been assigned. Depending on your status, other documentation may be required.

To begin the process to obtain the Ohio driver license you will need to present your documents to the nearest Highway Patrol exam station. The locations and contact phone numbers to the exam stations can be found on the BMV website.

You will be required to pass a knowledge test over the Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws, also accessible on the BMV website, and a vision test. Next, you will need to pass a road test and manuerverability skills test.

Once the testing is complete you may purchase the Ohio driver license.

Nich Nick you're totally right!!

I went to the DMV office to change my licence after confirming it twice with the hostess and their supervisor that I DIDN'T have to take a test.

After waiting about an hour and half I finally get to the counter and the lady tells me I have to take a test :-( so unprofessional of them!

She confirmed with a supervisor over the phone ( she was off ) that I did need to take a new test.

After confirming all my information she made me do a written test (passed) and today I went back for the practice test (passed as well).

I should receive my Texas Driver's Licence in the mail within 2 weeks. And after my EAD expires I have to go back for a renewal.
