Its about time that the USA faced up to the reality that there are two distinct cultures - the north and the south

600,000 Americans were killed in the first clash between these two groups and nothing changed in the mind-set

The two are locked in a miserable marriage and the rift gets larger with ever passing day

Not really. The Texas governor has no real power (it's why W looked so good in 2000), so we need some idiot to fill the role. It's a waste of time for someone with a brain. The state legislature only meets bi-annually, so they can't cause too much damage and every major law has to be supported by the people. Everything else is left up to the cities/counties after that. It works pretty damn good.

I still wouldn't risk living there after seeing his faith speech yesterday and H W 's comments about non-christians not being regarded as citizens

I lived 15 miles East of Clearwater, Fl and that had an international feel and I really liked it despite the fact that the Scientologists have there headquarters there - but 20 miles north of Tampa its all Nascar and a-huntin' dawgs and straw in the mouth, rusty pickup with a gun rack in the cab etc...

I wouldn't live in small-town Texas for the life of me.. In the cities though it's a complete different mentality. Yeah we have the religious nutbars around, but they don't exactly hold all the cards in the cities, which is nice. I like Fort Worth because despite the "GOP" friendly national politics, the local politics are very moderate/slightly left leaning. It's almost a mask really... We appear to be this right-wing city on the outside, but once people are here it's like "#######? Is this leftyville?" when you look at the way we develop, the regulations, the permit process, the 'gay friendly' nature even as well... It's actually weird. Almost as if someone is trying to keep it off the radar lol.

Actually formula one isn't all its cracked up to be either - but at least they go on a winding track and not round in circles like Rick Perry's eyes when he can't remember which hotel he is staying in.

I went to the Monte Carlo Grand prix (helicopter to the track)and the cars were going past at 160mph on city streets and only 10 yards away. Deafening, and I couldn't see the color of the car let alone who was driving

I went back inside, turned my back to the track, and watched it on telly

I think cities are the way to go. I would rather live on the Gaza strip or the bad side of Mumbai than in small town USA - especially in Colorado or Oklahoma or the confederacy. I was talking to a woman in her house in Colorado springs and she was whispering in case the neighbors heard her and she was ostracized for not toeing the party line. It's a maximum security prison with churches instead of look-out towers

The anonymity of cities allow people to be themselves - good, bad, gay, criminal - at least you know what you are dealing with. In small town America, they keep it all hidden and you don't know whats going on behind the white smiles and soft focus family photos. It's always a shock when people find out

I think the booing was for the commander in chief of the US Military and all it stands for, so they were probably anti-war Europeans
