So when is your hero going to balance the budget?

The budget gets balanced once or twice every 40 years...Maybe a handful of times a century.

Problem is our deficits are now out of control along with our debts. Tens of trillions.

I think we might balance the budget 1 time within the next 20 years.

But we'll owe over $25 trillion by the time we get a $100 billion surplus so who really cares.

It will be nice to get a Republican in the White House so the Republican Party gets tagged with a few $1 trillion deficits...

Well it took us 12 years and about $10 trillion in national debt but we finally have more jobs than we started when Clinton passed the most amazing once in a millennium economy (full of surpluses, both realized and projected) onto Bush.

As Mawilson would say we paid a $10 trillion cost for about 1 million net job creation! That is pretty bad. 10 million dollars per job! Hey, hire me for that price!!!

No. Let's get a Republican in there (Romney or Gingrich) and let them get slapped with 4 consecutive 800 billion to $1.4 trillion deficits.

Wait a second, they might further cut taxes so we could be looking at record deficits.

Why not get someone who would (shocker!) cut spending?

Step 1. Do nothing and let the Bush tax cuts expire across the board. Result: between 3.5 and 4 trillion in extra revenue (over 10 years)

Step 2. Freeze all Federal spending for the next 10 years. Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Military, Education - everything. Result: between 3.5 and 4 trillion in savings (over 10 years)

Step 3. Cut another 1-2 trillion (eliminate waste, redundant departments, etc) over 10 years.

Done - the budget is balanced. Not 10 or 20 years from now. Right now.

I could do it too! It really isn't that hard. Let tax cuts expire, raise retirement ages, cut some waste, shrink military, etc.

But I think our elected officials are not going to let the tax cuts expire (maybe expire but replaced with even greater tax cuts?). And definitely medicare/medicaid/social security will not be touched anytime soon.
