I went to the Social Security office today to let them know I was now a US citizen.

First, they couldn't find me in their system, despite the oath having been 2 weeks ago.

Second, they said once they verified the info, I'd be sent out a new SSN, and it may be a new number! Why? I have a card which shows no restriction or annotation, I don't need a new card (and certainly don't5 want a new number, my SSN is everywhere and used for so many security checks!).

On the plus side, registered to vote Wednesday and got my voter registration card today :)

My god! That sounds painful...I can just imagine how long it will take to sort that out across the board. Thanks for the heads up. Best of luck!

They will send a new card but with the same number. Not sure about not finding you in the system though. My experience was painless, just handed my CoN, and my new card (same number) was in the mail within 5 days.

Only filled out the SS-5 once for both my wife and stepdaughter, first for their EAD's, LPR, then for US citizenship, just changing Line 3 citizen status, and line 14, the date, printed it out from the pdf, had them sign it and took it into our local SS office. With the appropiate evidence, EAD card, LPR card, or the citizenship certificate where they made a copy, took the application, and that was it.

None of this trying to find it on some database, their SS number never changed since day one, and better not change, you can change your name on your card, like getting married, but not that number, that is yours for life. They both received three new cards in the mail, anywhere from a week to three weeks, not like you are dying to get it, except the first one.

Did run into a nitwit in the Wisconsin Rapids, WI office once, handing me a line of bull like you just received. Ask to talk to his supervisor and she corrected him in front of me. Is this your office as well, or do they even have more nitwits working for the SS?

More nitwits :)

I am in Fayetteville, Arkansas. I am in no hurry for them to update it, not as if I am about to apply for benefits, so I guess I'll just wait about a month and then give them a call to make sure everything is ok.

Its not that you are going there to get money, but going there to give them money, just want to make darn sure that money they are robbing you of by law is credited to your SS account. Then with constant threats in congress that you will never get that money back. They seem to forget, this is your money. That SS employee is paid by your money, should treat you like a queen.

Between you and your employer, 14.8% of your paycheck is going toward your suppose retirement, and to add insult to injury, that money, like a conventional 401K is not tax deductible, we pay income taxes on top of those FICA taxes. If you should die, your beneficials only get a one time check for 300 bucks to drop you in a hole someplace. Normally at that age, don't have kids under 18 that could get a couple of bucks with your death. But if you are a kid working at some miserable part time job, 148 bucks of each thousand you earned goes into someones pocket. Really a governmental ripoff.

Penguin,

are you sure that you are not an illegal immigrant who was brought here by their parents and it was all just a day dream . . . until now?

:bonk:

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

When I went they took a photocopy of my citizenship cert but they did tell me they have to wait and verify it 'in the system'. I wouldn't worry about it.

Maybe that is why mt kids think they can dictate what we watch on TV and what's for dinner, they think I am their nanny!:rofl:

Ha, my wife is going through that with a six week old German Shepherd pup. First time for her, but have to let that little guy know who is boss. Least they mature seven times faster than kids do. She also had problems with her teenage daughter, that is really a test of ones patience. No arguments, just do.

Congratulations, Penguin!

You will receive a new card but it will have the same number. I was told it would take about 2 to 3 weeks for the information to be updated in USCIS files when I notified SSA about my status change. I received my new SSN card about 2 weeks later. It could be that your name was actually being updated at the time when the SSA worker checked.

A friend of mine did have a problem with SSA when she updated her status with them as well. It turned out that someone had keyed in an incorrect inquiry and then tried to change it to a correct inquiry and it froze the system saying that they couldn't access her information. It took several visits and calls, connecting finally with one really useful employee who agreed to investigate why it was taking so long to find her information, and then discovered the 'error' and corrected it. It was about a month in all before she got her new card.

So, if you still don't have an update in the system in another week, or don't receive your new card, check with them again and ask to speak to a supervisor rather than the employee; it could be the employee who is having problems accessing the system.

Again, congratulations.

Don't know why they would produce a new card. I haven't done mine yet, but then mine is over 20yrs old and was before they started tracking immigrant status on the cards (employment or not-for-employment etc.)

I'll probably go into the office on Joyce early next week.

I went to Social Security office today to let them know I'm a US Citizen now - I was told to leave the office not even a min later because I had a bottle of water in my bag and the security officer "nicely" told to me "Ma'am, you need to go to your vehicle now and leave your water" :) hahaha! Anyway, the lady asked me for my Naturalization certificate and she updated wahtever info in their system and said I was all set - I asked her if I'll be receiving a new card in the mail and she said that my card is in perfect shape and I don't need a new one. I don't have any restrictions on my card, I believe a few years ago, my old card had a note "Valid for work only" with some sort of authorization, I don't remember the wording exactly. Although I'm not getting a new card I still had to fill out one of those new SS card forms (update of status).

Sounds like each office has their own procedure for updating the SS status. I just went into my local office, rattled off the social number and handed him my passport card. He asked some questions, which were probably there from when I first applied and he updated the computer entry. He said it would take 24hrs to be updated there and said I'd receive a new card. I told him my current card has no restrictions noted on it and I really didn't need a new one. He cancelled the new replacement and said, 9 out of 10 need a replacement card.

Took all of 5 mins. Was pretty painless.

Just as a quick update, I got my new SSN card in the mail today (I love how they put such important documents in normal mail, and the envelope having a big "Social Security Administration" sign on the front, so everyone knows....). It had the same number, but obviously a different issue date. Also the number in red on the back (no idea what that refers to) is different.
