My fiance just got here with me. She has been here for 3 days now. She just came from her family in Phil then stopped by two different families before coming here.

I was wondering if anyone has any tips for getting over the homesickness.

Thanks

Have her talk about her feelings, let her arrange the house, maybe re-decorate it the way she likes, take her to the different neighborhoods around you, to the mall, to the park... Let her communicate with her family, help her find places where she can find the type of food she's used to, discuss about activities she would like to discover (sports, art...). Give her some responsibilities at home, and make sure she gets English classes if she needs to.

You've got to let her realize slowly that now, her life is in the US with you, this is where "home" is.

I'm waiting for our aproval but I moved to another country before: there's a few weeks of shock, but you have to get over it by becoming more familiar with your new environment. Just don't stay home all the time in front of the tv!

Congrats for the completion of the process!

hi,

you can encourage her to volunteer, that helps a lot. Also I dont mind talking to her at all. Tell her to email me and we can chat and I can fill her up about life here in the US. I am working full time almost after I got here so I did not have time to be homesick...

Time, understanding and patience from you will be the most important treatment.

The key i feel is to get them busy and into a routine as soon as possible. Even though they cannot work immediately they can take classes and go to volunteer. That way they have something productive to do and don't just sit at home. Also, take her out and introduce her to new things and new people and of course try to find people from her country and restaurants from her country so she has a little bit of home here. The homesickness will never really go away but it will ease up as she gets adjusted to life and routine here in America.

Does her immediate family back home have a home computer with internet access and webcam? That helps a lot because if so your fiancee can webcam with them anytime and the internet voip call is free. I know there are internet shops all around but in some cases the older family members like mom and dad and grandparents may not be pc savvy and don;t want to always have to go to internet shops cuz they need assistance to use the computers. A pc at home for them is more conveinient and usually someone is around to get them online and then they can see and talk to your fiancee and its easier for them to learn to do it themselves if its at home. I don't know your fiancee's situation or if her mom, dad etc, are pc savvy or if they have one in their home or not. I'm sure you have home pc she can use maybe even several like in my case. Just suggesting because its a great way to alleviate her home sickness if she can see and talk to her relatives pretty much whenever she wants or even at scheduled times based on different time zones between here and there.

Congrats, God Bless and best wishes to both of you!

www.meetup.com so she can meet up with fellow Phillipin people in the area!!!!!

Because of this website, I found Dutch people in the area of Pittsburgh and I actually have lunches with them once a week and we come together when someone of us is throwing a party..

Very nice website, and she can be with her own "kind", talk her own language and socialize.

Good luck

I would give her some time, though. She barely got off the plane, is probably still jet-lagged, and needs to get used to waking up in a different place. If her English is not good, I think that attending some classes for foreigners would be helpful. Many community colleges organize this type of courses for a very reasonable cost.
