I suggest "Johnny Air". They are Philippinos, they have offices in New York and california. I shipped a camera and separately a telephone with no problem. You mail it to their office then they call you

and tell you what the price is based on weight. I think like the balikbayan boxes, they have connections so you don't get nailed by customs. Filling up a whole balikbayan box is a pain in the butt and expensive especially if you are putting new stuff in it. As the name implies Johnny air ships by air. Estimate maybe 2 days for package to get to them by US mail , then 8 days for them to get it to PI.

they can deliver to the house for maybe $5 xtra. I think they said the electronics were a couple xtra dollars because of customs. I think I paid the US mail plus about $15 to Johnny air for a small camera.

I also recommend it for documents

Sometimes I see posts like this where people argue they were cheated or the like, but the truth is they just do not understand how it all works. An American shows up to play "football" in Australia and then gripes that he is penalized for touching the ball with his hands and claims it is not "fair." Truth is he just does not know the rules. The game is different.

There are rules for sending things to the Philippines. They may not make sense to you, but they are no wackier than the rules for baseball or anything else.

Just think of this as one step in a long path to greater cultural understanding. And trust me, if you marry someone from the Philippines, this is just the start.

^^^ Your post has my official stamp of approval. Job well done, mapletree!:D

There are some very honest, nice people in the Philippines who would give rather than take and don't ask for money. My fiancee and her family are one of them. Although this can be confused as culture, it is not. It is corruption and they are finally working on it. They arrested the former president of the Philippines the other day for their involvement in corruption. The new president is at least working on it.

^^ I wouldnt put trust on "working it out". I'm not saying that Gloria does not deserve to be arrested, but what is the current administration doing with the suspects with the Ampatuan massacre? No arrests either? What about local politicians too who cheated on the elections and stole public money. Surely, Gloria isn't the only bad apple in politics. Also, some cabinet members of the Aquino administration are suspected of corruption and favoritism. But do we see at least investigations? Nope.

Personally, I find it more of a political grandstanding of the Aquino administration. Thankfully, there is no reelection for presidency.

Agreed! It's only $8 per pound as of the last time I sent a package. Last time I sent a package, it cost me more to send a package FedEx within the U.S. than it did to send a package by Johnny Air to the Philippines. They do have connections because when my wife was in the Philippines, her package was still wrapped and taped when she received it, meaning customs did not examine it.

I'll have to remember the Johnny Air option if I need to send anything in the future.

I can say from past experience that DHL is the only shipping company that will work with you to prevent PH Customs from ripping you off.

When I sent my wife a used laptop they tried to charge us 12,000Php import fees. DHL intervened and got it reduced to less than 600Php!

The difference is that DHL has their own employees in the Philippines whereas FedEx, USPS etc all contract with local carriers.
