I just got my oath letter, Form N-445 but they scheduled me on december 14th 2011, however I'm leaving the country for a family visit on december 6th and won't be back till january 11th.

It does say on the bottom 'If you cannot come to this ceremony, return this notice immediately and state why you cannot appear. In such case, you will be sent another notice of ceremony at a later date. You must appear at an oath ceremony to complete the naturalization process'

Problem is it's not clear to me where to return the notice with the explanation. The address on the envelope I got says:

DOHS

National Benefits Center

Post Office Box 648005

Lee's Summit Missouri 64002

Is it there? Or should I send it directly to the local office.

Thanks in advance

Great timing!

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Well, a follow up on myself.

I called the 1800 number and they told me to send the letter to the LOCAL USCIS office. Sort of confusing in pure USCIS style. They also told me to make a copy of both the letter sent and the N-445 I received and to keep it for my records.

Be aware that rescheduling the oath can mean a month or even more delay in your process. I would try to attend the original oath if possible.

This is no problem for me. I am in no rush. I just had all my xmas travel plans arranged and it would be a big mess to change them. I'm sure they can schedule me in jan or feb and it will be ok with me. I'll let people know what happens. Sending the letter with the petition for delay today.

Yeah that is right, You need to send it to your local USCIS office. Make sure you make a copy of the N-445, letter of explanation before mailing it. Since you will be back only in Jan, the rescheduled oath ceremony will be fine for you.( If you are not in a hurry to get naturalized)

Really do not comprehend if in no big hurry, why did you even send in your N-400 when you can come to this board and learn approximate processing times and schedule that when you will be free. Tees off the USCIS when you can't make an appointment or they have to do the extra work to reschedule. Really don't want to tee off the USCIS.

Then those airlines, really love to screw the hell out of you with ticket prices over any holiday, security lines will be extra long, flight delays because of weather, and if you miss a connection due to delays, those overpriced hotel rates come out of your pocket. A hell of a way to spend Christmas. Now the airlines that use to care about families with young children are charging more money because young kids are an inconvenience to them.

The N400 was submitted back in july and definitely didn't know it was going to take this long. I actually sent it then because I knew was going to be here for the rest of the year. However it took a lot longer than I thought even after I looked at the processing times for the N400.

Putting your life on hold for more than half a year because you are going through naturalization is unreasonable. The USCIS knows this and they offer tools to reschedule the fingerprints, the interview and the oath. Rescheduling is normal and must happen all the time.

Following up on this thread.

I have now received rescheduled oath letter. I originally requested any time after the 11th of January and two days ago I got a new letter saying they have scheduled me for the 24th of January at the Paramount Theater in Oakland at 9.15am. My DO was San Francisco. They were very fast acknowledging my request for a change, and they rescheduled me promptly as requested too.

So this is going to be it! the end of a very long road.
