Iv been in the u.s. under the same roof as my soon to be hubby for approximately 3 weeks now yaay! we'r supposedly getting married by next friday (just walking into the courthouse doing our thing) about 4 days ago i walked into a little problem being here in the u.s. i really hurt my back, (probably had to do with the three day drive in a very uncomfortable uhaul and moving box's and furniture) but yeah i did. not the first time iv gotten a pitched nerve, but i think its a little more then that like i think i slipped a disk. Back in canada (quebec) id just go to the pharmacy and get some robaxin. but i have learned now that you cant get that here!!!! at leas not without a prescription, you also cant just go to the pharmacy and ask for tylanol with codeine in it cuz they look at you all real weird and think your some kind of alien addict or something. uhm so i have no insurance yet, cant really go to the hospital or dr's ####### do i do?? is there any u.s. equivalent that i can get? is there any kinda of muscle relaxant you can get in the u.s. without a prescription? anyone have any ideas or help of n e kinda to offer? im feeling a little lost in a land i dont know well.

Probably not - I have my brother bring down Robaxicet every time he visits :) It is very disconcerting to be without provincial healthcare.

Did you by chance get health ins for inbetween when you left and when you start being covered by the husband's plan? If not and this is really really bad, you can still go to the local Doctor. Call ahead and explain that you are not currently covered by health insurance as you've just moved and will be paying cash and the rate they'll charge you will probably be significantly less than if you had coverage.

Good luck

Following is advice only. It doesn't replace a face to face consultation and I don't want to face retribution if it doesn't work! I'm assuming it's lower back and is due to the travel and lifting you described. If you have lost weight recently, have numbness, tingling etc then please go see someone. Otherwise you can try:

Lie down on the floor on your front, then push your upper body up using your hands until your arms are as straight as possible, with your legs relaxed and hips on the floor if poss. Try to 'relax' in that shape for up to 5 slow breaths. If you're not sure what I mean Google 'Mackenzie' position for back pain.

Relax, really relax, your back will be stiffening up so try to stop that happening by continually moving and not tensing your surface muscles. Don't sit still for more than 10 minutes. Do shoulder circles and gently move move move. Just walk around the room if you have to. If it's a disc, if it hurts to bend forwards, do back bends, if it hurts to do back bends, do forward bends...make sense? It should right itself within 3 days or you should see someone if it gets worse. Do pelvic floor exercises to encourage your deep supportive muscles to stay active and keep breathing slowly.

I suggest you ask your husband to go to the pharmacy for you and ask about muscle relaxants or something else for what you're describing. You are able to see a doc, and you are able to get a script, it just won't be cheap. Maybe a health clinic would be cheaper?

Agreed. this sounds like something a medical practitiioner ought to be dealing with, not a visa forum. I wish you the best though and hope you get it sorted, back pain can be hellish, but if you take the wrong medicine for it you could end up with a whole world of other troubles too.

Pharmacies in the US are not permitted to fill foreign prescriptions. The prescription must be written on the official US form with sequence number in order for a US pharmacy to accept it, and the physician who writes it must be licensed to practice medicine in the US.

Take your prescriptions to a local doctor. You aren't required to have insurance in order to see a doctor. An office visit shouldn't cost more than $150. If you shop around a bit you should be able to find one for much less - maybe less than $50. They'll examine your back, write any prescriptions necessary, and they'll evaluate your prescriptions from Canada and write new US prescriptions for them.

Whatever you do, do NOT let this get to the point where you end up in a hospital emergency room. You aren't required to have insurance nor have a means to pay in order to be treated in an emergency room - nobody is turned away. However, if you don't have insurance and you aren't eligible for publicly subsidized care, then you will be billed for the treatment. Just signing in can end up costing you thousands of dollars.

Getting the prescriptions filled is another story. Medications which are still protected by patents will be oppressively expensive if you don't have insurance. A month's supply of some medications can cost hundreds of dollars. Explain to the doctor about your lack of insurance and they should be able to find adequate medications to help you at lower cost, or prescribe something that's available in generic form.

Another option is one that is fairly new here in Ohio, but may be available in other states...

Many pharmacies now have mini urgent care offices located within the pharmacy. The office visit is conducted by a PA (physician assistant or nurse practioner). These folks can dispense prescriptions and the office visit is typically less than $50.

Hope you feel better soon.
