Wow, you really need to have that much in your savings account? I don't have any where near that and I'm sure hardly any one does?

Where can I find this information? Is it in some kind of guideline that is clear cut and calculated?

Edit: Nevermind, I meet the requirement of 125% of poverty so I will be ok.

Canadian immigrants kind of fall under different rules. You can be broke as a joke, no money in the bank, but as long as the sponsor makes over the 125% rule, or have a co-sponsor it isn't an issue.

Continued from before... fingers faster than brain today :)

We have substantial savings, but yaaa, no where near that. Maybe if one includes the equity in our house.

FYI, I'm a poor college student living on student loans and grant money, and since yesterday, a part time job at a pharmacy. I have a co-sponsor that makes well above the 125% rule, so it's all good.

As said before, as long as you make above that line for your household size you needn't worry.

Some countries require savings for both petitioner and beneficiary, and have more loops of red tape that have to be jumped through precisely as told.

Canada is not one of those countries.

Did you just calculate that he needs to have 95,000 in current bank savings when his current income is 19,000? Is that $95K a minimum, cuz there can't be a max.

So if you have a yearly salary of 50,000 and even 5,000 in savings, that's not give enough for a family of two (petitioner and beneficiary)?

I apologize if i'm reading this discussion wrong.

ya makes sense lets say someone makes 19,000 a year what needs to be in the savings ?

You do not need to have anything in savings, or list it at all. If you make enough to cover the 125% level, then all you need is to list your income and provide a letter from your employer that states your position and salary plus a few months worth of your most recent pay stubs. You can leave the assets section completely blank, and no need to show bank statements. You would list your savings and other assets if you need to use them to make up for any shortcoming in your income per year. So, say you made $17,000 a year instead of $19,000. You need $18,387 for a household of 2. You could use your savings to make up the missing $1,387. However, when using assets, they need to be 3 times the difference, so in the example's case, you would need $4,161 in savings.

You said you make enough, so you do not even need to bother with assets at all.

Uhm if you make 50,000 a year then you have no reason to have savings on the forms at all because you make more than enough for 2 people on income alone. This has already been said.

To clear up some confusion in this thread for others even if OP is all set.

I believe it is 5x the 125% number for your house hold.

From VJ Guide for Affidavit of Support:

"When assets are used, the assets must equal 5 times the difference between the annual income and the

needed 125% of the poverty level, this is because the affidavit is in effect for 5 years. For instance, if you

needed $15,500 income and had an annual income of $13,500, you would need an extra $2,000 of assets for 5

years, or a total of $10,000 in assets in addition to your income."

So required assets/savings is not 5 * petitioner's annual income.

It's 5 * (125% poverty level for your household size minus petitioner's annual income)

ya makes sense lets say someone makes 19,000 a year what needs to be in the savings ?

19,000 x 5 = 95,000

just use the calculator on your computer lol good.gif

95,000 for 2 people does not last long on bills, food etc.

As has been answered correctly before, 19,000 per year for household size of 2 people is over the 18,387, so no need to show assets.

But let's say for the sake of doing math that the petitioner who makes 19,000 per year has 2 children so the household is size 4.

125% poverty line for household size 4 = 27,937. (From http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-864p.pdf)

Back to our equation:

x = 5 * (27,937 - 19,000)

x = 5 * (8937)

x = 44,685

So this made-up petitioner with household size 4 and income of $19,000, they need to show $44,685 in assets.
