Hello All,

There was an issue with my hubby birth certificate in the IV packet, so long story short we had to send them the only original he has to be sufficent. Therefore it is vital it is returned at his interview since he is not in his home country where another would have to be obtained. I have understood that it will be returned to him upon request... However, is there some type of exchange that has to be made for it after his visa interview in frankfurt. For an example is a zerox copy sufficent to swap it with? I have tried to get clarification on this several ways and made many attempts but I am not having any luck at all! Please Help...

As always thanks in advance for any help you may have to offer and blessings to all.

I believe that the exchange you are thinking of is G-884 (request for return of original documents). The form and instructions are on the USCIS website.

Good luck!

Thank you for trying to help but I need this type of document for the Consulate in Frankfurt, not USCIS. I will keep trying to find the answer on the Frankfurt, Germany Consulate site...... Unless anyone can help please.... or even finds it before me?

If you just need a new copy of his German birth certificate, you can contact the German consulate closest to you (if you're in Indiana, your German consulate would be in Chicago).

Was it NVC who asked for the original copy of his birth certificate? I've seen this situation before with NVC and USCIS. The proper way to have handled it would have been to include the following:

1. The original document they are requesting.

2. A photocopy of that original document.

3. A letter explaining that the document is irreplaceable, and a request that they keep the included photocopy and return the original when they are finished examining it.

4. A self-addressed and stamped envelope that they can use to return the original document.

I helped a friend do this with his original birth certificate, which was extremely fragile and impossible to replace as it was issued by the government of the Republic of Vietnam, which no longer exists. He got his original birth certificate back in the envelope we sent them about four weeks later.

12/15/2009 - K1 Visa Interview - APPROVED!

12/29/2009 - Married in Oakland, CA!

08/18/2010 - AOS Interview - APPROVED!

05/01/2013 - Removal of Conditions - APPROVED!

That is the problem he is in germany as a student, he was born in cameroon and the issue they had with the certified copy of his birth certificate that we sent them was because it was issued to him in germany and not in the country of his birth. for him to get another one like the one he has his only option is to go to cameroon to get it. thank you for your help though.

What happened is.... when we sent in our IV/AOS packet we included a certified copy of his birth certificate however this certified copy was issued to him in germany and they will not accept it unless it was issued from the proper authorities in cameroon where he was born. So when we were notified of this i immediately sent in the coversheet they sent me to use when responded back to their notification, the original birth certificate and a zerox copy of the original birth certificate..... do you think this will make it possible for them to return it after his interview at his request since i also sent a zerox copy?

For a K1 we HAVE to send the originals of some documents, they are returned at the interview. If however you were not asked for an original then they are not likely to return it to you without a copy. I would have him ask at the interview if they could make a copy and return it to you. They do not require the original for their files.

yes tha sounds very simple but i have learned from others experiences that we shouldnt expect them do do anything at our convenience. even something as simple as making a copy of a document that is nearly priceless. they have a zerox copy of it that i sent along in the same response packet that included the original birth certificate, so i just pray that after his interview there will not be an issue for it to be returned to him at his request. thank you for your help
