Newt Gingrich has taken the lead in PPP's national polling. He's at 28% to 25% for Herman Cain and 18% for Mitt Romney. The rest of the Republican field is increasingly looking like a bunch of also rans: Rick Perry is at 6%, Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul at 5%, Jon Huntsman at 3%, and Gary Johnson and Rick Santorum each at 1%.

Compared to a month ago Gingrich is up 13 points, while Cain has dropped by 5 points and Romney has gone down by 4.

Gingrich looked really strong in the financial debate and he's been a politician a long time so on issues like foreign policy, he already has answers that won't trip him up.

He will be a strong contender all the way through.

In every debate (that I have watched) Newt has carved out a place for himself as the "Team player" who can give thoughtful answers on any topic presented.

HAd he lost 40 Lbs, he could have shown how serious he was about this run.

All these people come up through polls and then crash back down. To me it shows how the R's are not comfortable with Romney as a candidate. The two R's that are different from the rest: Ron Paul, gets minimal face time and the other Gary Johnson isn't even allowed to play.

It doesn't really matter who wins, as any candidate has to run two races and thus needs two strategies.

In order to win the Primaries, the candidates need to win over the right wingers, Christian fundamentalists, crazies, gun freaks, abortion opponents, and anti-immigrant Reptilians. The "winner" then has to appease all of the American voters, so the strategy for the Presidential election is totally different, more moderate, etc.

Once a winner has been picked, none of what they promised matters anymore, as Mr. O. has proven so effectively.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.
