What do you say when Americans tell you they are Scottish?

We don't "do" this topic in the UK forum. It's bad form here -- take it to P&R.

By your reasoning, we can't call you "American," you do understand. We'll only refer to you as Frisian from now on. Like the lovely cows.

Lovely, lovely cows.

ETA: It's so super-cute, Kip, that you missed us UK B!tches so much you had to come here to find us. Absolutely adorbs.luv.gifluv.gifluv.gif

Why Maven...you and a few others from the UK forum have paid so many visits to the RUB forum that I only wanted to pay respects in not so likewise manor. No flaming and/or cheap shots from me. :)

As far as Frisians go, Frisian is the basis of the English language. Frisians migrated to the shores of England long before the Saxons and Angles and even Celts for that matter.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Silly Kip, seems you've tried trolling the wrong forum. As usual, you wander into a thread, and just pull random made up factoids out of your as$. If you're going to quote "facts" (slimquotes™), then at least cite your reference. Otherwise, most people just figure you're making things up, again, and dismiss any post you make.

Right, so in my time here on visits and now living here, American people keep proclaiming themselves as Scottish.

So after hearing their "lineage", and sometimes even famous Scots that are in their genealogy (Flora MacDonald and Robert the Bruce to name a few) or asking me what my lineage is (something I have never investigated), I never know what to say and just kind of smile and nod. I was asked one day if I knew information about a surname, and where they originated and I was met with a baffled expression when I didn't have a clue. Or like throwaway comments like "Oh, I am Scottish as well!", from people born and raised here to American parents.

I am glad people care about our country but I find it funny that a lot of these people research Scottish history (some even relaying it to me like I didn't live in Scotland for 22 years) and probably don't know what real Scotland today is like!

Like, I would recommend Chewin the Fat, Kevin Bridges, Biffy Clyro, Glasvegas and Paulo Nutini to anyone wanting a taste of modern Scotland. Any other suggestions welcome!

Of course I have nothing against Americans loving Scotland, its how I met my husband!

Does anyone else get this all the time?? (applies to all UK people for sure, I met a descendant of one of Nelson's illegitimate children!)

The '45 and Subsequent Diaspora [move or we kill you] flung Scots all over the World. When someone tells me they're Scots, I start speaking Gaelic for the next 10 minutes. Freaks them out, as they never had a chance to learn it. I was lucky, my parents forced me to learn it before regular school started for me - I was one of the few caucasians at my school that had English as a Second Language, the hard way (dive in, learn now).

'Current' Scots are there mostly because of long-winded legal battles to reclaim their ancestral lands. Concepts of Clan/Sept - no longer a legal entity - but has been fanticized since the end of WW II as 'something to attach to' , as the Diaspora was really f'ing painful. There's some interesting 'Scots' that are there due to immigration, but I won't go into that.

Yer right - no one with 'that' interest really wants to know what modern Scotland is really like. Tis a different world, these days, aye?

Slan !

Usually I don't deal with trolls but I'l make an exception this time in order to give you a nice quick education in regards to European migration and the English language. Read slowly so you take it all in and no bs wiki remarks...the citations are referenced at the bottom of the page. I'm going to guess a lot of Brits already know the info I'm posting on here in regards to their own language.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Frisian

The people from what are today northern Germany and Denmark who settled in England from about 400 onwards came from the same regions and spoke more or less the same language as the people who lived in Frisia (as medieval Friesland is usually called to distinguish it from the present-day regions with that name). Hence, a close relationship exists between Old Frisian and Old English.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_English_language

Cohabitation with the Scandinavians resulted in a significant grammatical simplification and lexical enrichment of the Anglo-Frisian core of English.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_English_language

Apparent confirmation of this is the fact that simplification of the case endings occurred earliest in the north and latest in the southwest, the area farthest away from Viking influence. Regardless of the truth of this theory, the influence of Old Norse on the English language has been profound: responsible for such basic vocabulary items as sky, leg, the pronoun they, the verb form are, and hundreds of other words.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frisian_languages

Frisian is the language most closely related to English and Scots, but after at least five hundred years of being subject to the influence of Dutch, modern Frisian in some aspects bears a greater similarity to Dutch than to English; one must also take into account the centuries-long drift of English away from Frisian. Thus the two languages have become less mutually intelligible over time, partly due to the marks which Dutch and Low German have left on Frisian, and partly due to the vast influence some languages (in particular French) have had on English throughout the centuries. Although intelligibility is often strained between the two languages (especially spoken), the Northumbrian dialect of English bears a striking similarity to Frisian in many ways.

Old Frisian,[6] however, was very similar to Old English. Historically, both English and Frisian are marked by the loss of the Germanic nasal in word like us (ús; uns in German), soft (sêft; sanft) or goose (goes; Gans): see Anglo-Frisian nasal spirant law. Also, when followed by some vowels, the Germanic k softened to a ch sound; for example, the Frisian for cheese and church is tsiis and tsjerke, whereas in Dutch it is kaas and kerk, and in High German the respective words are Käse and Kirche. Contrarily, this did not happen for chin and choose, which are kin and kieze.[7]

Now for a lesson in migration...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frisians

The ancient Frisii enter recorded history in the Roman account of Drusus' 12 BC war against the Rhine Germans and the Chauci.[2] They occasionally appear in the accounts of Roman wars against the Germanic tribes of the region, up to and including the Revolt of the Batavi around 70 AD. They are not mentioned again until c. 296, when they were deported into Roman territory as laeti (i.e., Roman-era serfs).[3] The discovery of a type of earthenware unique to 4th century Frisia, called terp Tritzum, shows that an unknown number of them were resettled in Flanders and Kent,[4] probably as laeti under Roman coercion.

From the 3rd through the 5th centuries Frisia would suffer marine transgressions that made most of the land uninhabitable, aggravated by a change to a cooler and wetter climate.[5][6][7][8] Whatever population that the Romans had allowed to remain dropped dramatically, and the coastal lands would remain largely unpopulated for the next two centuries. When conditions improved Frisia would receive an influx of new settlers, mostly Angles and Saxons, and these would eventually be referred to as 'Frisians', though they were not necessarily descended from the ancient Frisii. It is these 'new Frisians' who are largely the ancestors of the medieval and modern Frisians.[9]

By the end of the 6th century, Frisian territory had expanded westward to the North Sea coast and, in the 7th century, southward down to Dorestad. This farthest extent of Frisian territory is sometimes referred to as Frisia Magna. Early Frisia was ruled by a High King, with the earliest reference to a 'Frisian King' being dated 678.

In the early 8th century the Frisian nobles came into increasing conflict with the Franks to their south, resulting in a series of wars in which the Frankish Empire eventually subjugated Frisia in 734. These wars benefited attempts by Anglo-Irish missionaries (which had began with Saint Boniface) to convert the Frisian populace to Christianity, in which Saint Willibrord largely succeeded.[10]

btw the days of the week we use in English are Norse and Latin influenced. Thursday = Thor, Tuesday = Twesday = God called "Twew", Wednesday = Woden's Day, etc...

You're welcome to post here but stirring things up by storming in and making statements about Irish Protestants is not the way to make friends. Tsk tsk.

But don't say anything about him posting insulting JPEGS or making snide remarks. Let's just pretend that didn't happen on here ok. I mean it's not like we need a rocket scientist to go back a few post and see how this bs started on here with his first post on this thread. I know I didn't attend MIT or Stanford, but even I have eyes and can read English.
