driver's license - what happens with a probationary?

I'm not sure how it works with licenses in general, as far as moving to the US and having your Canadian one switched for a state one. I'm from Quebec and I have the probationary license, which after 2 years turns into a regular license. When I move to the US I'll have only had it for one year. Would they make me do a driving test in the US since the probationary wouldn't count as a real license for them?

Cananner,

From what I know it would depend on the state that you will be obtaining your new drivers license. I live in California and a forgein drivers license is valid as long as you don't have your green card yet but once you do you have 10 days to get a local license. You can check your state's DMV webiste and they should have the information you need. Also if you post what state that you will be getting your license, someone who may have gone through that may be able to offer the information that you need.

Good luck :o)

You will most likely be required to take the driving test because you have a drivers license from another country. It could vary from state to state but the state of Massachusetts requires you to take the driving test.

It varies from State to State.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

There is a very large possibility that one would have to take the driving test over, but there is a smaller chance of that happening to a Canadian driver.

Here in PA, I will not have to take the full examination as long as my drivers license is not a permit and it is not close to the expiration date.

Here in Indiana my husband was told he has to take both the written test and the driving skills test, and he's had a license for almost 20 years and has a commercial A-Z license, so yeah, it varies from state to state. He was also told his Canadian license was valid to drive on from 1 year of his POE... again... here in Indiana. You can call or look at your state's Department of Motor Vehicles website and should be able to find your answers.

I had the "G2" which is not a full license and its from Ottawa.

I was given a FULL state license and only had to answer 25 correctly of 30 questions on computerized test ( much easier than the questions in Canada no less ).

This was in the state of NE.

Your I-129f was approved in 5 days from your NOA1 date.

Your interview took 67 days from your I-129F NOA1 date.

AOS was approved in 2 months and 8 days without interview.

ROC was approved in 3 months and 2 days without interview.

Actually CA is interesting. There are several topics where VJ members have been fined for not having a valid licence simply because they LIVE in CA and now that means they have 10 days to get a licence.

Here's a couple of threads:

- http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/196639-driving-in-california-a-warning-to-all-you-non-resident-newlyweds - this is the big one. Guy got into a LOT of trouble. The first post on page 4 is his update on the result.

It appears this is a state thing where simply LIVING in the state makes you a "resident" which makes your foreign licence invalid... a lot of K1's could end up in non-driving limbo because of it.

OH EXCELLENT! I had looked up what was needed for me to change my licence and was so worried about having to do a driving test even though it didn't say I needed it on the DMV site (it is called the DMV right?) Anyway, I am also in Maryland and about to do this myself and you made my day! (I am a good driver, I just panic in stressful situations, and though I am fine driving around in Annapolis on my own or with my husband, having someone grade me everything I do freaks me out!)

LOl I took my road test in Toronto 2 months before I moved here, I would have hated doing another road test (nerves)

Yeah Maryland has a thing with Canada and they consider it an out state transfer. Its the Mva here, confuses me how they have two different names lol Good luck :)

Can anyone in Florida weigh in whether a road test was required when they tried to switch their license over?

I'm also wondering about Florida. I checked the DMV website and there was no mention of having to take any tests. It just talks about what identification to bring with you. I'm under the assumption no test will be required. yay
