I got a new firearm this weekend. It's a 7.62x39mm AK-47 "Draco" model that is just under 22" long. It takes standard AK mags and shoots semi-auto. Basically it's just a short AK-47.

According to the laws of the United States, this is a pistol. According to the laws of Ohio, I can carry this thing concealed - and loaded - on my person, even while I'm driving in my car or walking through the bank, the grocery store, etc.

Is this the "Common-sense" laws the politicians are talking about?

My problem with this (I'm not against it, for the record) comes from the fact that we have stupid laws here in Ohio that prohibit me from carrying loaded AK-47 magazines in my car if I'm carrying an AK-47 rifle but it's fully acceptable if I'm carrying an AK-47 pistol.

Basically, I posted this as a wonderful example of how "common-sense" legislation doesn't really work.

i suggest wearing baggy cloths when you ccw with this one .....

otherwise people might wonder what that bulge really is ....

Exactly my point. This is the same as the "assault weapon" AK-47 yet it's more compact and more easily concealed. Yet perfectly legal!

Whats the point of having a Stalingrad rifle unless you are in Stalingrad ?

I have an Ar-15 Rock river Arms with 3x30 caliber mags and nikon scope

also a CZ 5,65mm Target rifle with a nikon scope

It' s great for annoying red necks - you leave a melon in front of your target, and when you hit it, it sprays evaporated melon all over their targets

Then I have 38 special+p pocket rocket for pit bulls/lions/bears/bandidos and a Ruger 22 target pistol and a CZ 22 LR target rifle - BSA sweet scope

I have just sold my 3 Lee Enfields - I need a scope and tight accuracy - but I need precision so I would not buy an AK unless I lived in Texas or South Carolina or Mississippi or somewhere else where there are lots of christians who hear voices telling them to eliminate foreign unbelievers

I have no problem with that, If you are a criminal you aren;t going to care anyway what the law says.

Just goes to show how absolutley STUPID cosmetic gun laws are. "Sawed off rifles" are illegal (unless licensed and registered before manuafacture) but pistols such as this are legal.

Just like the so called "assualt weapons ban" that dod not ban anything and the manufacturers simply removed small cosmetic pieces to comply with the law.

S&W makes the M15, their version of the M16 in both a regular and the "compliant" form. The "compliant" form removes a few cosmetic items and is legal for sale in CA and other states with "assault weapons" bans. Fools.

all the while, all they have to do is allow anyone to carry loaded handguns of any type and crime will plummet to near zero.

You can say whatever you want unless it violates the TOS. I am not in Stalingrad but I'd expect this place to turn into Stalingrad within a matter of days once the lights go out. When that happens, I'll be happy I have a Stalingrad rifle.

I too have a Rock River Arms AR-15 (and a Colt... and a Spike's) and waaaaaaaaay more than 3 magazines. As you've pointed out, the AK is for spraying, the AR is for precision. Different tools for different jobs.

This is the one thing I'm lacking right now. i don't really have a decent carry pistol. I'll remedy that soon.

I bought a P-22 for my wife. She seems to like it quite a bit but it's definitely not a carry gun. Well, not unless you like ticking them off more before you fist fight.

Americans, being gun enthusiasts, have always favored a precision and accurate rifle. This takes a lot more work and production time and cost but it was always the way since our first official rifle, the 1803 Springfield. We had no interest in the British Land Musket (Brown Bess)not accurate enough and we killed a lot of the redcoats with neat holes in their heads while they tried thier mass formation volleys. Smoothbores, the AK47 of the time never interested Americans. It was said in WW2 that Germany had the best hunting rifle, American had the best target rifle and Britian had the best battle rifle, but the Enfield was crude compared to the 1903 Springfield.

we had the Tommy gun, 11 pounds of precision fit parts. The brits had the Sten. Basically an exhaust pipe. We had the Garand, they still had the Enfield. The Russians had the PPsH, a more crude device than the Sten. The "Russian" Mosin Nagant was actually a pretty good rifle, but it was a Belgian design and most of them were made in New Jersey by Westinghouse.

All this means the AK47 is not a target rifle and was never designed to be and EVERY school child in the FSU (and still) knows how it works and was taught to fire it at indoor school ranges, including the girls! Any briefly trained person can pick one up and spray deadly bullets at an enemy. Anyone over the age of 10 was trained how to. How many American school girls could use an M16?

The AR on the other hand is a very accurate rifle and has taken over ALL target competition of all types in the US. It dominates the shooting line in every discipline so thoroughly one would begin to think there is no other rifle available. (so much for them not being suitable for sport, they are the world's leading target rifle)

Our record vs armies armed with AKs is not dismal but not good. A determined, trained army with AKs is fully the match of our troops armed with our rifle. Iraqi's do not count. No matter what they are armed with, if they throw them down and run, they are going to lose. The North Vietnamese are a much better comparison, we were not going to beat them by virtue of a better rifle.

the AK has a purpose, it is excellent for that purpose. The AR has a different purpose and is excellent for that purpose.

AKs are not junk, not by any means. Suggesting that a major power would arm their soldiers with "junk" is simply not something that can be considered by thinking adults.

I don't grab my shotgun to make 500 yard shots. Much in the same way, I wouldn't grab my 20" HBAR to clear buildings.
