My wife is an American citizen. Our 8 month old infant has endorsed I-551 stamp on her passport (serves as a green card for a year until the actual card received). I have the same stamp as well.

It was my understanding that a child born to a US citizen is automatically a US citizen.

Anyway, read the N-600 instruction that state what to submit with the application

Should provide more information, gather the mom is a US citizen, but where was the baby born? If born in the USA, you don't have to do anything, baby is already a US citizen. But if born, I assume in Canada, that is listed as the country, should bring the mom's proof of US citizenship, birth certificate of the baby to your nearest US consulate. Don't get the part about the green card. That is normally only for kids of immigrant parents, if born of a US citizen, already a US citizen by law. Would have been much easier if the baby was born here, but more than likely, a lot more expensive.

We applied for a green card for the baby as my wife did not live for 5 years in USA ( 2 of which when she was above 14 years old).

According to Child act in 2001, the baby should get the American citizenship upon admission to USA.

We applied for SSN for the baby. We ll try our luck and apply for a passport for the baby today.

My wife has only the passport. She does not have the certificate of citizenship with her now.

The baby does not have any daycare records or so.

Will that be a problem?

A copy of the passport in place of Naturalization certficate is good. You will need 2 affidavits for proof of the baby's proof of residence - you can give.

If your daughter has SSN and/or Green card, that will be proof of her residency in US, so you won't need any more affidavits.

I am not sure why they are asking your wife's Citizenship certficate - passport does the same. But I guess you have to satisfy them.

Since you mentione about I-551 stamp, I thought that you do not have her Green card.

Hope everything is clear now.

The only thing that worries me is that my wife was naturalized through her mother in 2002. She used to visit USA for a month every year.

Does she need a job in USA in order to prove that we live in USA in order to apply for passport for the baby?

Thanks

I don't think so, because you are already in US. That criteria is used before allowing immigration not after that.
