Hey everyone.

The holidays are coming up and I been doing a lot of thinking.

I am currently an employed single young adult living in the South , and although the cost of living here is manageable and life is easy going, I'd like to move North. I feel like I need to move a place that's more in tune with my personality, my beliefs, etc.

I have to say that living in a small town hasn't been all that wonderful. It's really hard to find people who share your views where mostly everyone is conservative. I want to move to a state where there is more to do. I am young so I am very outgoing and people friendly! I love nightlife and going out. Plus I love the cold weather!

What would be the proper steps to take? Maybe tour various cities around the States first, and see how they feel?

Whats the best cities for young people?

For those of who have recently made the US their home, did you find your new State a welcoming environment?

What do you think, would be a good state for me to move to ?

If you like going out and don't want conservative then don't choose Utah! Although it is cold here right now, has snowed twice already.

From the sounds of it Seattle might be a place to look at? Never been but everyone I know who has been loves it.

Or, San Fransisco is highly esteemed!

May I ask you where are you from? to me american nightlife is definitely not what I expected. Movies and tv programs show an unrealistic nightlife. Anyways, if you are looking for diversity L.A. is nice, too many different styles of bars and clubs to choose what I noticed though is people tend to go to certain bars depending on their race or ethnicity. Keep in mind that any type of bar or club close at 2am. Las Vegas is nice to party but I would never live there. New Orleans used to be nice before Katrina but I heard it really affected economy and there's a lot of bad political influence in that area. I love Orlando but I felt everything was too "Disney oriented"..Well since you are thinking about moving north I would choose San Francisco, city per se is beautiful, people is very unique, weather is nice overall. Seattle is nice but unless you like overcast weather don't move here. I've been living close to seattle for less than a year is nice if you are into art and music but I haven't seen too much diversity in this area.

Since I got married I enjoy spending time with my husband rather than going to bars. I used to love that before but I reached a point when I enjoy other activities. Again nightlife here is boring! I've been to several countries and I would say without a doubt this is the worse country to party.

Hi guys. Thanks for your response!

It's funny that both of you mention Seattle. I have always wanted to visit Seattle since I hear a lot about its indie culture and music scene. It also looks so nice and green. Definately number 1 on my to-try list. Plus, I love rain!

to me american nightlife is definitely not what I expected.

I agree, but at least life here is more comfortable and there are more opportunities.

Anyways, if you are looking for diversity L.A. is nice, too many different styles of bars and clubs to choose what I noticed though is people tend to go to certain bars depending on their race or ethnicity. Keep in mind that any type of bar or club close at 2am.

Eh, L.A does not look appealing to me. I dont know, its looks run down, though there are nice suburbs. Still, seems like its too crowded and not enough green.

Las Vegas is nice to party but I would never live there.

Ditto.

New Orleans used to be nice before Katrina but I heard it really affected economy and there's a lot of bad political influence in that area.

I love New Orleans but I would def not live there. I just like to visit for Mardi Gra ;)

Well since you are thinking about moving north I would choose San Francisco, city per se is beautiful, people is very unique, weather is nice overall. Seattle is nice but unless you like overcast weather don't move here. I've been living close to seattle for less than a year is nice if you are into art and music but I haven't seen too much diversity in this area.

Thanks! I will look into it. SF is not too far from Seattle so, too. So maybe I can try one and then later the other.

Since I got married I enjoy spending time with my husband rather than going to bars. I used to love that before but I reached a point when I enjoy other activities.Again nightlife here is boring!

I bet. Where in the States are you?

I've been to several countries and I would say without a doubt this is the worse country to party. [/qoute]

Haha! I have to agree!

San Francisco doesn't look too far from Seattle on the map, but it's still quite the distance! It's also often cold, but doesn't snow - I suppose it depends on what type of 'cold' weather you like!

Seattle's probably also a little more affordable.

I've lived in neither, but know several people in both, and they all love their respective cities.

I recently moved to Boulder, Colorado. Lots of green, a decently sized downtown and close to "big Denver" for a taste of real city life a couple times a month. It's a very liberal city, with some sort of cultural festival happening almost every week (but oddly enough, it's about 99.9% white people, lol). The unemployment rate here is lower than in the rest of the country and the weather is beautiful -as much sunshine as Florida and still we get all four seasons with plenty of cold weather and snow (but always sunny).

Boulder is a VERY expensive place to live, but if you can find a job, it will probably pay accordingly. The public transit system is wonderful and cheap and you can pretty much walk out your back door and into the mountains :)

I'm currently living in Washington State close to Seattle so I've been there several times it looks like a big city but in fact it's not, many options to eat, events, shows, concerts. If you drive just half hour lots of green, lakes. It's pretty but thanks to the weather it's either overcast or rainy almost the whole year. Again, I would recommend San Francisco!

If you enjoy REALLY cold weather, you should try Minnesota.

We may have crappy winters but we do have a really good arts and music scene.

Check out The Current a great music station from Minnesota Public Radio. You can stream online and they have song of the day podcasts available for download.

It's not for everyone but the twin cities does have a lot to offer for the right person. :)

Actually, I am living in Minnesota and I don't think the winters are crappy at all! Maybe it's because snow is still a novelty to me. :P

But yes, the twin cities is a great area for arts and cultural events.

Yeah, unfortunately the novelty has worn off for my husband. He just hates driving in it but he has taken up snowboarding which helps. I hope the novelty never wears off for you :D

I think you have to be a kid to truly appreciate how fun snow can be.

expect your cost of living to go through the roof if you move to California (especially San Fran...) and/or the Northeast...

Seattle/Tacoma area wouldn't be too bad depending if you don't mind some rain and/or a cost of living that is about 12% higher than national average.

I would recommend Minneapolis or one of its suburbs if you're looking for cold weather, decent nighlife, and mixed politics. The cost of living there is OK. It's higher than the national average, but bearable still.

If your look for cities here are a few following:

Bay Area (expensive but diverse)

Portland Oregon ( less expensive, similar culture)

Omaha Nebraska (super stable place - unemployment has been low there, cheap, and the old market is pretty cool)

Chicago (expensive but again lots going on)

Denver/Boulder as someone else mentioned.

Kansas City
