Friends,

I applied for PC tech. position on careerbuilder, few days later, career builder sent to me asking to stop all communications with this employer as it's considered as fraud.

Before that, this person contacted me and asked for my full name and address to send me 10 laptops to fix and associated check.

Today I got a check of $3000 in mail associated with email from that person stating that i should deduct my fees ($1000) and send the rest of the money to another one in texas by western union to ship me the laptops to fix.

I dunno what is the risk of that!!! they told me it's fraud, but the man already sent me the check!!!

At the same time, it isn't logic to cost 10 laptops $3000 for fix and shipment.

Sure there is something wrong.

Anyone had same experience, or know if it's legal or not? I'm brand new in the states, and I don't need troubles.

Thanks

The check will be bad. But by the time they cancel the check you will have given someone else YOUR 2000 dollars. This is a scam.

Think...why did they send you a check but you have to send western union CASH????

NEVER trust anyone who asks to use western union---unless it is a spouse.

If the cheque bounces you will be charged for the bounced check but then so will the people who's bank it is.. unless it's not even someone's bank account any more and just a random cheque from an old account.

Something isn't quite right.

It will bounce after he trys to deposit the check this is an extremely common scam. If you have to send money to anyone else to get an item its not for real. They expect you to try and cash the check and forward cash to the other person effectively stealing your 2000$ and leaving you with no money at all because the check bounces.

I wouldn't even try to cash it considering they have his full name and address and he has already been warned by career-builder that the job is a scam. I wouldn't put it past them to some how access your account information when/if you try to cash the check.

Sorry for that, but i didn't get all what you said.

I go to the bank, if the bank refused it, so why should i send him $2000?

If the bank gave me the money...so, how will I lose it?

The most important question...What can he do with my full name, address, and phone number?

Thanks All Friends

They will not process the check for you. You will have a hold put on it when you try to deposit the check. You would remove 2000$ to pay the other person to get your items. You will send this money and then find out later the bank DENIED you check being deposited to your bank account because the check is fake. Then your 2000$ is gone and you have no money. Its called fraud.

He can do a lot of things if he is a fake and a scamer like steal your personal identity and open credit cards and cause a lot of credit issues and personal issues for you.

You'll go to the bank and deposit the check. They will credit you with the money from the check (kinda like loaning you the money until they get the money from the other peoples bank) BUT your bank will send the check to the bank that the check is from to ask for the money. That bank will say "There is no money" so your bank will TAKE the money OUT of your account that they loaned you.

In the meantime when you deposited the check you think "excellent, I have the $3000 in my account" (but you don't.. it just looks like you do) so you take the $2000 out to send via WesternUnion. Then when you find out the check DIDN'T clear and the bank takes the "loan" back, you've lost the money you took out to send via Western Union.

Does that make sense? This is why some people don't accept checks. There's no guarantee you've actually been paid and you shouldn't spend that money until you find out the check has cleared.

I see now, It's the first time I know that the bank gives the money, then takes it again if the check bounces.

Thanks my friends

Now, what should I do now? can I send the check to any governmental agency to do the appropriate actions toward him?

And Regarding my full name, address, phone number, and the other data in my resume, such as year of birth, country of birth, education records...Am I really in troubles?

I'm already appreciated your help.

Thanks

Put the check and the envelope it came in ( if you still have it ) in a zip lock and take it to the local post office and ask to speak to the post master.

This is a common thing. You should never accept checks for more than what you are selling something for or any other case where they ask you to return the "extra" via western union.

It it very bad for you , first you can get arrested for fraud yourself ( yes it has happened )

They hope you put the money in the back and immediately take the money to send them , you go to WU and pay the fees to send the money. However your bank in about 2-3 weeks finds out the check is bad and wants the total amount back. So you are out the bounced check fees , overdraft fees, the WU fees and the amount you have sent to them, plus any more fees because you have started to spend the money already.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

I work for a bank and this is what would happen. The check is a scam he does what is asked and then ends up having to pay back the 3k immediately. (or if banker is really nice and understanding they may set up a payment plan with interest) as well as a fee for a bad check along with many other types of fees

You can take it to your bank and ask them if its a genuine check see if they can call to verify funds etc.. but more than likely they already have notice that those checks aren't real. Usually banks get weekly updates for scams

My advice, either contact your bank telling them you have a fraudulent check ask them who they think you should contact or shred it!!!

Forgot to say... lots of banks these days don't verify funds easily so easiest solution is shredding it unless you want to use it as evidence against them which is why nigeriaorbust said to take it to the post office using and putting it into a plastic bag.

here is a link for some good info on checks you didnt expect to receive...
