2 men shot dead in alleged home robbery

Two teenagers are dead after they were shot by a man who said the teens forced their way into his East Anchorage home early Thursday and tried to rob him, according to police. Police announced Thursday afternoon that two suspects in the robbery had been arrested.

The occupant of the home, Larry James, 55, told police he fired shots at two men who entered his home, said police spokesman Lt. Dave Parker said.

Two 19-year-old Anchorage men who died from the gunshots were later identified as Maurice T.R. Johnson and Joseph Trantham, police said.

Later Thursday, police arrested two others they say were involved in the robbery. They are Brian Pfister, 18, and Ursula Pico, 21, both of Anchorage, police said.

James called 911 at 12:23 a.m. and said he'd shot at two men who broke into his home, police said. Police listed James' address as 705 Muldoon Road, which is the Rangeview mobile home park.

"Responding officers learned that two males entered James' home, at least one of whom was armed with a handgun, and assaulted him, injuring his face," Parker's statement said. "They forced James to his room to open his safe but James produced a handgun and fired shots at the intruders."

In an interview Thursday, Parker said police are not yet releasing details of what they believe was in the safe or what type of handgun James fired.

Trantham was found unconscious outside the home with a handgun, and Johnsno was found collapsed at a nearby Tesoro gas station, Parker said.

Both appeared to have been shot in the torso and were taken to local hospitals, where they died, Parker said. Parker said it was unclear whether the men were shot in the front or back of their torsos. A medical examiner was scheduled to conduct autopsies on their bodies later in the day, he said.

According to witnesses, the two would-be robbers were shot inside the home, Parker said. The police spokesman said James appeared to be the only witness, aside from the robbers, inside the home at the time.

James was also taken to a hospital, though his injuries were not considered life-threatening, the police spokesman said.

Pfister and Pico are scheduled for arraignment Friday on charges of robbery, burglary, assault and conspiracy. Pico was also charged with tampering with physical evidence, according to police.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

He was beat up but he is alive and they are not. HE WINS! 4 against 1 is not enough if 1 has a gun!

Criminals who break into a home deserve no empathy. A good example where gun ownership makes sense.

But, say . . . a mobile home with a safe?

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

The way it should be, 3 people (well 1 person now) know what happened and only 1 is talking... the other two have a little problem and will not be saying anything.

Yeah, same here. But you know, we are now considered politically incorrect, intolerate and rightwing.

Oddly enough, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Patrick Henry and a few others were also considered politically incorrect...I hold the same values they did...and I say, I still stand with them.

do you de-value your life and that of your family when you leave your home?

Yeah, same here. But you know, we are now considered politically incorrect, intolerate and rightwing.

By whom that matters?

Not anybody important to us any way.
