Chaotic scene followed deadly shooting. Two news photographers were hurt by occupiers who attacked them as they tried to video tape the man who was shot.

Just moments before NBC Bay Area's Jodi Hernandez was to go on the air with a live report, she reported hearing shots fired near Occupy Oakland.

Hernandez said she heard 6 to 8 gunshots on the south side of Frank Ogawa Plaza followed by screaming from people in the area at 4:59 p.m.

Police were not in the area at the time.

An ambulance arrived at the scene within a few minutes to treat the victim of the shooting. The injury appeared to be serious with emergency workers performing CPR on the man before he was taken away to the hospital. That man did not survive. He was declared dead after arriving at the hospital.

Hernandez reported that two Bay Area photographers covering the story were injured in the melee that followed the shooting. One of the photographers worked at KGO and suffered a cut to his head. He was apparently attacked by members of the occupy movement who did not want him to videotape the victim. The second photographer who was hurt was from KTVU. He said Occupiers wrestled him to the ground.

Occupy Oakland protesters told reporters the man who was shot was not part of their camp. They said they didn't recognize him and said the shooting was not occupy related. In fact, some people on the scene said the man was coming to the area for help and/or protection.

"The person on the ground was not part of the occupation. I canverify that," Shake Anderson, an Occupy Oakland organizer said. "This is a street incident. It happens all the time."

Nothing surprising, it's Oakland.

So Crusty, what is your thing? You posted another one like this and tried to tie it to the occupy movement in Vermont but it was a suicide that had nothing to do with the movement, or Ben & Jerry's or anything in Vermont.

Now this, and this is vague and who can tell if it has anything to do with the occupy movement? So what are you doing? Trying to imply that the occupy movement could be associated with this.

I think that if it could, you would provide that evidence.

(11-10) 19:11 PST OAKLAND -- A man was shot and killed this evening near the Occupy Oakland encampment outside City Hall, inflaming debate over whether the month-old gathering should be allowed to remain.

The man, whom several Occupy campers said they did not recognize, was shot outside the 12th Street BART station on Frank Ogawa Plaza at 14th Street and Broadway about 5 p.m. He was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland, where he was pronounced dead, said interim Police Chief Howard Jordan.

Jordan said two groups of people had gotten into an argument and that someone from one group fired at the other. No arrests have been made, and the dead man's name has not been released.

"This was not an internal incident," said one of the campers, 35-year-old Shake Anderson. "What happened was the result of neighborhood violence. Don't forget, we're in downtown Oakland."

Two prominent critics of the encampment, however, said the question of whether the dead man or the killers were protesters was irrelevant.

"This camp is attracting an element that's adding to the problem that already exists," said City Council President Larry Reid.

Reid was one of five council members who held a news conference Wednesday calling for the camp's removal. They were largely drowned out by protesters.

Councilman Ignacio De La Fuente, who has also called for the camp's removal, said tonight, "Unfortunately, we will have no excuse for not taking action. This was escalating and was going to happen.

"It doesn't matter what people say," De La Fuente said. "This is a result of our inaction, and the mayor is not doing anything. The mayor is absolutely and unequivocally responsible for this."

Mayor Jean Quan was not immediately available for comment. Before the shooting, Quan said she wanted Occupiers to leave on their own and said any eviction plan had to be "thoughtful."

We shut down bars which require too much police attention,

doesn't matter if they are actual patrons or not causing the trouble... if your business is a magnet for trouble you get shut down.

Shut these folks down.

Oakland police plead with protesters to leave

OAKLAND, Calif. — The union that represents Oakland police officers released a letter Friday asking "Occupy Oakland" protesters to leave the plaza in front of City Hall so officers can concentrate on fighting crime in other parts of the city.

The request by the Oakland Police Officer' Association follows a fatal shooting shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday at 14th Street and Broadway, near the month-old encampment of "Occupy Oakland" protesters in Frank Ogawa Plaza.

In what it called "an open letter to Occupy Oakland," the union said, "On behalf of the 645 Oakland police officers we represent, this letter comes to you out of duty to protect the Oakland community and its citizens."

The union told protesters, "We understand and sympathize with your message and "we respect your right to peaceful protest" but said "we are also sworn to protect the citizens of Oakland" and the city is now "in a state of emergency."

The police union said its member officers "are the 99 percent struggling in Oakland neighborhoods every day to contain the 1 percent who rob, steal, rape and murder our law-abiding citizens."

But the letter said the "Occupy Oakland" protest "is taking our police officers out of Oakland neighborhoods and away from protecting the citizens of Oakland."

The union said it is important to fight crime in Oakland because "we are the fifth most violent city in the United States -- with more shootings and homicides than any city west of the Mississippi."

The letter said, "Last night's murder, right in the epicenter of "Occupy Oakland," is unacceptable. So is the violence being promoted by 'renegade' protesters who are lighting firebombs, destroying property and attacking police."

The union said, "It is time for us to stop directing all of our efforts at policing the small enclave of Occupy Oakland and get back to our job of protecting the citizens of Oakland in the neighborhoods where our residents live."

Gary these arrests and incidents are coming in so fast now it's hard to keep track.

Rapes, suicides, Underage girls, drug use, assault on media, the list goes on and on.

Oakland is a cesspool.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

If you have something to report that is true and substantail then do it. Crusty has been going around starting these threads with no truth to support his ideas. That is like a Dem tactic, it may as well be global warming.

Oakland is a sh*thole so I really do not care what you say about it (anything bad is probably correct) but at least make your case with facts and not vague stories. That is just lame.
