Hey everyone, i am going to move to the US on november 20th and getting married on december 2nd :-) i have a question about the SSN. I already have one, so what do i have to do?? I lived on a J-1 visa for one year in the states before and also worked back then, so i have my number. Should i just wait until i got married and go there and change my name? do i need to fill any forms or just go there with my SSN card, passport and marriage license and ask for a name change? Thanks a lot :-)

Once you receive a SSN it is for life and all you will have to do is yes go and change your name after marriage.

Divorced !st November 2012.

Married only 2 years 1 month

You do not have to do anything for an SSN, you keep that one for life.

Changing your name on the SS card is pretty low on the priority scale, as in if you NEVER do it, it will not matter. I LOST my SS card in 1973 and have never needed one since. Only the number means anything. Alla's SS card is securley tucked away in a drawer with her maiden name and the statement that says "not valid for work without DHS authorization" Who cares?

The SS card does not grant you any right to work. You cannot work after entering on a K-1 (any K-1 can get an SSN, my wife got hers 16 hours after arrival) Having one already will save you 30 minutes at the SS office and that is about all. When Alla gets a job she shows her green card, nothing else is needed.

After you get married, file for your AOS in the married name and when you get your green card in your married name then go to SS and change your name on the card if you want to.

I'm glad to hear that Lea's will be good cause that means that Ice's will be too. We don't even have to do a name change I guess?

Currently.... they have issued Ice the incorrect GC and we have tried 4 times to fix it. First time they had us send it to the incorrect address. Second time they said we used an expired form, which was the form they gave us. Third time was "oh sorry we lost the last page, can you send it again?." Fourth time is the gov is shut down. Will this ever be corrected in time for Ice to get the permanent GC? Stay tuned to find out. T_T

A Social Security card is not a vaild form of ID in itself. It is not necessary to change the name on the card, I suppose most people do but in reality it will never make any difference. If you ever had to show the card for some reason (I haven't found a reason to in nearly 40 years) you could always show a copy of your marriage license to explain the name change.

Just not a priority thing. If you have an SSN, great, just one more little thing you do not have to do. Change the name whenever you want. Use your green card for proving your work eligibility

Lilly,

in most U.S. states you will not be able to get a driver's license without proof of lawful presence extending 180 days. Since your I-94 is only valid for 90 days, you need to wait 'til you at least have your EAD card at hand (don't know about Wisconsin -- sorry about that), perhaps even your Green Card. Not a problem, drive with the one you have until you can get a Wisconsin (again, sorry about that) one.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.
