I know you need a passport that is valid 6 months after issuance of your visa. My passport expires in February 2013. I am estimating that my visa will come through in July-ish. Also I am thinking my packet 3 would have to be sent back around this February and it requires my passport number. I know usually you can only renew passports within a year of expiry. So the question is: is there anyway can I apply any earlier than this February? If not is it going to cause problems if my passport number is different at the interview?

Aos:

10-01-12. Sent AOS, AP and EAD

10-09-12- Recieved NOA's for forms

10-24-12- Successfully walked in for biometrics (originally scheduled for 11-08-12)

11-26-12- Made info pass appointment for emergency advance parole. Denied, but agent called service center to request an expedite.

11-28-12- Agent at Infopass called me to let me know service center approved my request.

12-01-12- Advance parole received in the mail (2 page version, not combo card)

I know my ex-MIL sent her and her husband's passports in a year and a bit earlier than expiry and Passport Canada called her to let her know of her error and she asked if they could go ahead anyways and they did. I am thinking that if you send a letter with it saying you anticipate being out of the country when it is time for you to renew your passport and will be out of the country for an extended period of time then it could go through early.

Couldn't hurt to call and ask - I did notice that their website says in the Traveller Section that you should have a passport that is valid well beyond your return date. :D

I renewed mine during the process without any issues at all. You just need to use the updated passport number once you receive it. I believe you can renew BEFORE the 1 year as long as you give them an explanation for why you need it renewed.

The only problem I anticipate is that I don't plan on moving to the US until mid-September on next year, which would make the passport have less than 6 months validity. I just don't want to have any problems. Maybe I will call the passport office and see if I can renew it in January.

Way back in 2004 I went to the passport office in Halifax and applied for a new passport. Mine had well over a year left before it expired. The passport dude at first did not want to continue on with application as it had sooo much time left. I explained it was for USA immigration and after a quick discussion with his supervisor, went ahead with the application

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
