Hi there,

Question about EAD, Greencards, and SSN. I got my SSN as soon as I came here on my fiance visa and it says on it 'Valid only with DHS Authorization' which is fine, I have my EAD.

Now that I have my greencard, I have heard contradicting things on what i need to do. Do I need to go to the SSN Admin and get a new card that doesn't have the 'Valid for work with DHS AUthorization' on it? Or do I keep it and keep renewing my EAD?

Apologies if this is a stupid question but I have had contradicting answers from USCIS so would love to know what others have done here!

U dont need to keep renewing the EAD if you have the GC already. You need to go to the SS with your green card and they will update your status in their system and will issue a new social security card for you.

You don't renew the EAD, it was voided once you got the GC. it's useless.

You don't HAVE to go to the SSA to update your card (to have the DHS authorization removed) but I did.

Don't renew your EAD. It's no longer valid anyway. Now that you have a green card you can get the "valid only with authorization" stamp removed (ie get a new social security card), but you don't have to if you don't want to. Your social stays the same and your GC IS work authorization so it's entirely up to you.

EAD means nothing now that you have your GC. You don't have to get the stamp on your SS card removed, but I would recommend it. I remember reading posts on here where people have had issues due to that stamp, even WITH the GC. It's simple enough to do.

You do not have to get an unrestricted card, but many people do.

Why?

Well, beside the obvious reason -- having a SS card that has no restriction on it -- it's primarily for work purposes.

When being hired for employment, you have to provide proof of who you are and that you are authorized to work in the U.S. There are two ways to do that:

1) With your Green Card only (proves both)

2) With your driver's license (proves who you are) and your unrestricted SS card (proves that you are authorized to work).

That means, you don't have to show your Green Card when getting hired, which is helpful if you can't find it or it is expired, as long as you have an unrestricted card. So it's really your choice, and it may depend on whether or not you are seeking employment as well.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.
