Any advice on how to avoid shipping charges?

Anytime I want to ship something to Germany from the States the price tags brings tears to my eyes.

Shipping anything other than documents in an envelope with UPS or FedEx costs a fortune. The cheapest

way of shipping is usually USPS. Since I usually send something for birthdays, etc. the shipping often

costs as much as the contents of the parcel.

Today I tried to go to a German online store and wanted to pay with my MasterCard. That way it would be

shipped within Germany and I could avoid the additional shipping charge shipping it from the States.

Unfortunately it seems they don't allow this. Then I set up a PayPal account. Same result. It is not allowed.

Did I just make a mistake? Are there better ways? What is your experience?

Thanks for any advice!

Errrrr I just typed a huge reply and it disappeared. Hard to type on my iPad so I will make it short. I use amazon uk. They charge me in $ and my credit card doesn't charge a conversion fee. If there isn't an amazon Germany it may be cheaper to buy on amazon uk and ship to Germany since it would be in the EU.

Oh here http://www.amazon.de/ try this
