Hi Y'all

I lost my green card a couple of weeks ago when our home was broken into along with a lot of other electronics and papers, i have a police report on file and in the process of recovering/rebuilding my life it sucks i know.

Sadly for me my green card was among the stolen items and i am in a dilemma since i was just about to start the N400 process on the 5 year rule. So my question is with limited funds and the desire to get my citizenship what is the best route to go since filing an i-90 is like $485 and then N400 is like $700 money that i do not currently have. Can i skip the replacement process produce the police report and file for the N400 or is it absoultely necessary that i file for a replacement GC which i will not need since i will already be filing the N400 for citizenship???

Thanks for any advice or tips offered its appreciated.

First of all, very sorry to hear about the break-in. That happened to someone I know on the week of his BIRTHDAY!!! Terrible way to spend a birthday :(

Second, I am not very familiar with the Naturalization process since I do not know too many people that have been through it, but what I do know I will share and you can take it with a grain of salt. The fee to Naturalize is currently $680 as of Nov 2010. Click on this link or copy/paste it into your browser to verify document requirements for the N400 process: http://www.uscis.gov/files/article/attachments.pdf

The first bullet states that if you do not have your Greencard you must submit your N400 application along with a copy of the I-90 receipt. This leads me to believe that the only thing that will substitute your missing Greencard is your proof of application to replace it. Not what you want to hear, I know, but it's what I was able to come up with... :(

After much more digging, alas! I found a similar topic here on vj, click on this link and read the thread (very encouraging) http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/304585-lost-green-card-for-naturalization-interview/

The guy was in your same predicament and was able to get the Greencard requirement waived, check it out and see if you would fall in the same category.

Also, it helps if you do a vj search for "Lost Greencard", it will turn up similar stories...good luck!
