Almost 60 years ago, a planned community embodied the hopes and prosperity of America. Now, it represents a more realistic picture of the American experience. The BBC investigates Levittown, Pennsylvania, as part of a year-long series.

I grew up not far from a Levittown in NJ, actually we called it Willingboro.

You could buy the most square footage for the money there.

Of course my timeframe is a decade or so after they were built.

The place was huge and was a "dry" area as I recall, to buy beer you had to go to a neighboring area.

It was also the classic case of White-flight as the racial makeup became largely out of balance for the rest of the region as the years went on.

Odd this clip did not tour the present Levittown to show the changes, with their strict codes I imagine it's still in fair shape.

This is an article about a BBC series that will explore life in Levittown over the next year (an election year). So they will show it - much.
