Medical exam during period (not Phillipines)

My wife has limited schedule availability before her interview on December 1st. It's possible that she will have her period during the only opportunity she will have to complete the medical exam. Searching the forums, I see many posts on this forum about Saint Luke's in the Philippines that say you cannot have your exam during your period, but nothing about other countries. Is this a universal rule? It contradicts the State Dept. website here.

If it is the case, I suppose we have to have her interview rescheduled? Should that be done directly through the consulate or through the NVC?

The country is Malaysia.

Medical Dr. Info for KLL also found at the DOS website this answer for "Can the applicant have her medical during menstrual cycle? YES!" straight from the DOS website. Soooo, best of luck and my prayers for a speedy journey.

One yes, one no, one I don't know! Anybody else want to chime in? I shot an email to the consulate in KL; they're pretty good about replying. teapotgurl1983, that makes sense to me, but the only information I saw here was re: Philippines so I wanted to be sure. Would be nice if they wrote these things down somewhere!

I got my information from the KLL US Embassy site. Google US embassy in Malaysia, there should be a immigrant visa option and in that section of the website it should give you the option to click on the word here in the medical section for more information. I followed this to the DOS website and input KLL for the specific information. Manila is it's own world so it isn't applicable to your situation.

Thanks for the info! I followed those instructions and read the KL-specific information (in fact, I'd read it before). It doesn't say anything about having the medical exam done during your period, though. The doctor's office themselves said that blood will interfere with the urine test (like teapotgurl1983 said) but I would love to hear that this is outdated or incorrect information.

The only reference I can find to the medical exam and one's period is on the state department website (and all the Manilla forums threads). Hopefully the KL consulate will give us the definitive word soon. In the meantime she scheduled for this weekend, but it remains to be seen if we will squeak in before her cycle.

Surely somebody has had a similar situation in a country other than the Philippines and can give a yay or nay?

Right, and I linked to that page in my initial post to start the thread. But a FAQ on the State Department website will probably not convince the doctor in KL, who seems to feel that they cannot perform the exam. Do you know of anything more concrete?

All I am sure of is it is referenced by the KLL Embassy website. There have been discrepancies with Embassy websites and reality before so your best bet would be to spend the dime and call the embassy this afternoon, their tomorrow morning.

I wasn't very clear, but it was the doctor that originally told us no. It contradicted with the State Department website and I couldn't find any information other than posts about Manilla, which is what prompted this thread.

The consulate replied to my email, disregarded my question (period-ok or period-not-ok?), and said they'd be happy to postpone the interview if necessary. Well thanks, but that wasn't what I asked!

However, my wife has managed to find some time to get to KL this weekend. So either she'll complete the exam this weekend or have to cancel and complete it two weekends from now when she has another schedule availability. The doctor's office said it takes them 4 days to get the results to the consulate.

Still, an official answer to the question would be nice for future VJ searchers.

Blood in the urine can cause false-positives. I wouldn't risk it personally (as annoying as that is).

As the consular isn't a medical profession, they can't provide any medical advice. It's true that they would suggest you to reschedule the interview than you aren't following the requirement of the doctor office. This is the only panel doctor (West Malaysia) that they trust for the medical check-up and I don't think you want to take a risk on your visa decision.

BTW, does the doctor office open on weekend?
