Hello,

I have been reading this website and the forum - it really is a fantastic advice for people getting a US Visa.

I recently married in Ireland, my wife (who is a duel citizen: American & Irish). We are planning on moving to the states early next year (ideally).

I would like to apply for a work visa. But my situation is slightly unique. I am hopeful to get a visa to work at the UN in NY for early January. Ideally I want to be working there, while a permanent visa is being processed. Can anyone recommend the visa I would be best suited to getting?

Sorry if this question is stupid and appreciate your help in advance,

Rock

I believe to obtain a work visa you need a sponsor, in other words, an organization needs to hire you first and then file the visa on your behalf. Do you currently work for the UN or any of its subsidiaries? If not, it is incredibly difficult to get a job in this organization. Not impossible though. So, go ahead and try. Go straight to their website. Do not go to other websites that charge a fee promising work at the UN. Those are illegitimate.

If you married a US citizen, tell her to fill out the sponse visa on your behalf. Once here you can apply for employment authorization and then find a job.

I've never heard of a permanent visa, so I don't know what is that, sorry.

Don't ever do anything you're not willing to explain the paramedics.

K-3 visas are NOT work authorized. You get to stay in USA for up to two years in 'that status' whilst you have attempt to file for a green card via AOS.

Stay away from K-3, purty please? Chase after the CR-1 visa when you have your work visa in hand; IMO if you run both concurrently it'll muck things up.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

You probably should post this question in Employment Visa subforum - but to summarize - you really can't apply for anything your current (in case of L-1) or prospective employer has to do that, typically through their lawyer. Typically quite difficult.

Yes, I have worked for the UN previously and expect to early next year. Getting visa's with them typically not complex (given that they are meant to hire from all members countries).

Darnell: thanks for the advice, so my best bet, is to head to the states on whatever visa the UN gives me, and while I am there, apply for a CR1.

I think its all a little clearer..thanks for the advice guys.

One last question...

If I was to conduct a DCF as both my wife is a US citizen living in Ireland with me, where the US consultate is. This seems to be the quickest as I could possibly expect a visa within 3 months? Is there any drawbacks to such an action?

Thanks in advance.

As long as you have USCIS Field Office in Ireland (which means you consulate still allows USCIS - situation changed significantly August 15th this year) that is probably absolutely best you can do with no drawbacks.

There is no USCIS field office in Ireland - you can try to see if you can go through London for DCF as they do have jurisdiction over Ireland.
