Hi All,

I heard that if you naturalize as an American citizen then you are obligated to pay US taxes for the rest of your life, even if you move away and never come back. Is that true?

you have to file us taxes, but generally you wouldn't owe anything*

*assuming you live back in canada full time and make less than $90,000 US. See Foreign earned income exclusion

You also may be liable to pay taxes for any inheritance you receive overseas if it is over a certain value. And if you are a US citizen an exit tax, for a few years after renouncing your US citizenship.

Agreed, but I have heard that America has threatened to crack down on duel citizens living in Canada. It has put a scare in many people who have spent practically their whole lives in Canada and had no idea that they were supposed to pay American taxes every year. Don't know if this has started a trend of renouncing US citizenship up there, but it's definitely a hot topic.
