I have happily reunited with my husband and immigrated into the US. I was wondering if anyone had any idea as to how long it will take me to receive my SSN. I have some opportunities lined up for work but I haven't received it yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Peace and love,

Elle

The border official I dealt with advised me to wait a couple of weeks to see if I receive my SSN (I had indicated on the Visa application that I would like USCIS to request one from Social Security for me). He said it had been his experience that people who had indicated they wanted one had to fill out the application anyway. HOWEVER, the information was sent to the SSA. My SSN card had a date of October 13, 2011 on it and I received it in hand on October 21, 2011 - a mere 10 days after my entry into the US.

I'm not sure if others have had this luck or if they have had to fill out an actual application. Hopefully, if you said that you would like USCIS to request a SSN on your behalf, you will receive it as quickly as I did.

Did you go the SSA and applied for a number? If you did, wait for two weeks and go back there and ask them to give you the number. They will print a letter for you indicating your number and once you have that, you can use it to apply for jobs and start working (provided that you have work authorization).

If you checked it off on the IV application for a SSN to be generated and sent to you, and it's been more than 3 weeks from POE, then it's time to go apply in person at a local SSA office. This is what I had to do. I entered the US on May 12, waited three weeks (till June 2), then went in the next day (June 3) to apply for the SSN. And 10 days later, I received it in the mail.

That's awesome! I hope I am as lucky as you were as well. Thank you.

Thanks for the information. I will definitely go if I don't receive it within 3 weeks. :)

I wanted to give you all an update with regards to getting your SSN based of course on my experience...

When I applied for my visa I check off that I wanted them to provide the information to Social Security in order to get my SSN automatically. Thanks to the recommendation of some people from my initial post/question, after 3 weeks and not having received my SSN I went to the closest Social Security office and made an application. The woman who served me told me that the information is not always shared. She check based on my name and sure enough no information was available so she took in my application at the time. It's a good idea to fill out an application before going so that if you run into the same situation as I that you will have it all ready for the worker. In fact, it impressed her that I was prepared in that way.

The whole process at the Social Security office took about 15 minutes and she told me that I should receive my number within a week. Sure enough it took exactly a week and that's with Thanksgiving thrown in the middle of all of this.

I hope you don't have to resort to what I did but if you do, rest assured that it is an easy and quick process.

Good luck to all of you! Now all I have to do is get a job! :)

Glad everything worked out so smoothly for you!

And good luck on the job front. Took me about two months to finally find a job from getting my SSN.
