Hope your wife found a job yet,if not wish her good luck! :)

She actually started working yesterday! She went in for an interview, I was waiting to take her home, and they had her start right then and there. Its not the type of work she wants to do and plans to continue the search for her preferred type of work, but she's very happy to be doing something. She has a very strong work ethic, and has been working since primary school when she sold brooms door to door after school. Six months of no work was driving her crazy. She made my life so much easier picking up all the chores I used to do alone but still felt she was contributing nothing. I reminded her I had told her that her first pay check was totally her's to spend on what ever she wished to do with it. I didn't want her to worry about being practical, this would be a celebration pay check for her. I expected her to want to go shopping for clothing or things she wouldn't let herself ask me to get for her. Instead she said she wanted to take me out for a fancy dinner and buy me a nice new shirt. She brought tears to my eyes that her biggest desire was to do something special to me. What a wonderful confirmation I found and married the right woman for me. I don't know why God hid her on the other side of the planet from me, but I'm sure glad we found each other.

Those are probably the ones they've been very slow to get to for some reason. Many October filers and some November filers have been getting their Green Cards. Its been even faster if you had an interview and were not just transfered. I don't think anyone has been updating the status page of the applications they are working on in months. And that appears to be all the customer service people can see. Go to the Immigration Timelines here, select AOS, then sort by NOA date. You'll have to page back quite a few pages, but you can see from people who are updating their status with approvals the dates they are pretty much working on now.

Alright dear friends,

I need your help, your advice, anything that can help me with my problem will be greatly appreciated.

After receiving the EAD went on to DMV to apply for a state ID.Everything went good, everything went through with no problem. Then we went to SSA Office to apply for a SSN.There the things didn't go so well. For some reason my application wouldn't go through.

This morning I get a phone call from DMV(we live in NC),telling that my application for ID may take longer or probably not being approved because my visa is not valid. So I tried to tell the lady that I am not applying for an ID based on my visa,I am applying based on my EAD and told her that our AOS is pending.Very nice lady she is trying to help me,right now I am waiting for her to call me back.

I know I should have been probably better off if I would have applied for all these when I first got here in 2009, but I didn't know at that time that I can apply for a SSN and ID.

I appreciate anyone's input.Thank you all!

Most state won't issue you states ID's without SSN. Its a law in all state that i have come across at least. So you might have to wait till you get your GC to get state ID.

P.S. they won't issue you SSN if your I-94 is expired or about to expire, so you might have to wait till your GC... good Luck

My wife wasn't asked to show a SSN in the state of Minnesota. They accepted her Philippine passport and our marriage certificate as proof of who she was and gave her the state ID. We picked up our marriage certificate, then got her state ID applied for, then to the SSN office to get that applied for.

I was able to get my State ID when I showed my NOAs for my AOS. Did you show them that?

No paul-kay,I did not show her the notice because I didn't even think about it,and I thought once I have the EAD there will not be any trouble, you know. I am going back there tomorrow.I am pretty sure she messed up,instead of registering my application for ID based on EAD she did it based on my expired K1 visa.

Thank you very much ,I will try that!

I hope that works for you there. This patchwork of local laws in the USA can be a real pain in the butt at times. So many immigrants expect every state is the same like back home. But the US Constitution was set up to give states a lot of local control on how they wanted to do things. Lately they've been putting laws in place trying to restrict illegal immigrants from getting access to state resources, but they are probably hurting more legal immigrants than illegal ones. If our federal congress would just do their jobs and deal with the broken immigration system, like allowing enough legal immigrants in, tightening up the borders a bit and making it harder for illegals to work or get services, states would not feel the need to do this.

I looked up what South Carolina requires for and ID, looks like they do require the SSN. It looks like you might be held up until the SSN arrives. There's only certain offices you can apply at to.

You can see their check list on requirements at this link. Scroll down to "International Customers Who are not US Citizens"
