Can anybody please tell me what is "DHS" "A" number in DS-230 Form part I?

Married---07/30/2011

USCIS Stage

11/07/2011-----I-130 Sent

11/10/2011---- NOA1 email received

11/14/2011---- Touched

1/4/2012 ------ RFE ( Request for Evidence ) email received

1/13/2012------ RFE document mailed to USCIS

1/25/2012------ NOA2 APPROVED ( Yahoooooooo )

NVC Stage

1/31/2012-------Case received at NVC

2/08/2012------- Case number received, IIN, both petitionner and benificiary email given

2/08/2012------- DS 3032 ( choice of agent ) emailed to NVC

2/10/2012------- AOS fee bill paid ( status: in progress)

2/13/2012--------DS 3032 accepted

2/14/2012-------- AOS fee bill shows " PAID" and IV fee bill invoiced

2/16/2012-------- IV fee bill shows " PAID"

2/17/2012-------- IV package sent via USPS

2/24/2012-------- IV package reviewed and accepted

3/27/2012-------- AOS checklist express mailed via USPS

That's your Alien Registration number. You probably don't have one, and you can write in "N/A"

Aug 18, 2011: NVC process begins
Oct 6, 2011: NVC process completed
Nov 4, 2011: Interview date assigned
Dec 2, 2011: Interview at Consulate (Result: AP - No reason given on 221g)
Feb 7, 2012: Passport requested by Consulate
(...Husband needed passport for personal reasons during this time...)
Apr 9, 2012: Passport mailed to Consulate
Apr 25, 2012: Visa issued
May 1, 2012: Visa in hand
May 31, 2012: POE at Montreal's Trudeau Airport
Early July: Physical Green Card received in mail. Yes, it's green!

March 13, 2014: ROC filed (went to VSC)

March 17, 2014: NOA

April 22, 2014: Biometrics appointment

December 9, 2014: Case inquiry initiated

December 11, 2014: Response: "The processing of your case has been delayed. A check of our records establishes that your case is not yet ready for decision, as the required security checks remain pending."

March 14, 2014: Received NOA that approval had been given on March 10; expect new GC within 60 days.

I have problems with question 43A and 43b in the part II of form DS-230. I am confused to choose " NO or Yes" Any help?

Move from left to right...

Have you ever applied for SSN?

If Yes, provide the number.

If yes, you can choose if you want a new card to be issued by checking the boxes below "Give the number."

If no, don't answer the question below "Give the number"

If you've never applied for a SSN, click no.

If you want one assigned, click yes below. If not, click no.

43b. If you clicked that you want a number assigned, click yes. You must click yes.

Although my husband already has a SSN, and didn't need one assigned, he still clicked yes to authorize communication between departments.

This is one of those have you EVER applied for a SSN. Do you currently have a SSN? If YES then you can get a replacement card issued, if NO then you answer 43b to have the DHS share their information with the SSA so you can get issued a SSC. If successful, a SSC will arrive about 3-4 weeks after your arrival in the US. Some have had o go to their local SSA office to get the card issued for a CR1/IR1 visa. This is a moot point for K-1 visas as checking YES gets you nothing as you still have to go to the SSA office to apply for a SSC.

Basically the US issues a person ONE social security number per lifetime. So if you were on a work visa or some other type of visa before and applied and received a SSN then you do not need another number-- 43A-- but you can ask for a new card-- 43A bottom. 43B is for issuing you a SSN if you never have had one.
