I just received a e-mail from USCIS stating:

No, they did not ask me about the supporting evidence.

Normally, you will need to submit documentation as evidence for the nature of your emergent situation. Expedite are not approved over the phone. My wife called lastly to request one, 35 minutes after they emailed her request documents as proof so that they can examine and make a final decision.
