i can think of many examples of 'what not to do' for a PRC person - many stem around not working for a Taiwanese employer wanting to pay under the table and not declare taxes.

But that's really not what yer asking about...

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

If her understanding is poor and she aspires to do work that requires understanding of english then she should probably enroll in school or get a job that requires her to talk to people a lot. Something like being a waitress or working in a store. Even volunteer work would help. That would force her to pick it up. For my wife the choice was a quality ESL program at a local university. That way she can open doors down the road to a better future. My .02...

I'd like to know this too. I hope my fiancee can come here by May or June and I'm sure she's gonna want to do something! She's in high end sales for a software company. But she really needs to improve her English if she wants to continue to do that work here.

Sometimes the local Chinese community will help her out finding a low end job, particularily in chinese owned businesses.

We're talking retail, restaurants, etc.

If you find her an ESL class she'll probably meet ladies who are looking for jobs, also, and they network pretty well.....passing on job openings to each other.

I'll more or less second what Darnell mentioned, be very careful if she does find a job that taxes are being deducted, and overall it seems legit.

Well her English isn't that bad. I mean it's not like she can just start at dell managing large accounts but I don't think she'd be that restricted to only get jobs from Chinese businesses. Don't local

Chinese owners tend to take advantage of new immigrants?

a bit, but more pointedly, Taiwanese business owners treat them like dirt, slaves.

'Chinese' is a relative term - be certain of how/where it's used.

If in doubt, if the paperwork is in Traditional Chinese Characters, it's not a PRC person, at all.

My wife came from Taiwan on a K-1 about 2 years ago. She never bother to really study English in Taiwan because she figured what was the point. She is a painter. When she got here, she took about a year of ESL at a college. We purposely chose a school in Manhattan away from where we live (Flushing, it's a like a Chinatown). I would also take her with me for happy hour on Fridays with my co-workers. Her English has improved considerably and now she is working in a dental office as a secretary. She's working in Flushing for a Korean dentist. The pay is miniaml but this forces her to speak English all the time, which helps.

By the way, those comments about Taiwanese business owners are pretty dumb. They are blanket statements and it's sad that people still make these kind of statements.
