4 Georgia Men Arrested in Terror Plot

Four Georgia men who were part of a fringe militia group were arrested on Tuesday in what the Justice Department described as a plot to use guns, bombs and the toxin ricin to kill federal and state officials and spread terror.

The men, all aged 65 and over, were recorded telling an F.B.I. informant that they wanted to kill federal judges,Internal Revenue Service employees and agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, according to court documents.

“There is no way for us, as militiamen, to save this country, to save Georgia, without doing something that’s highly, highly illegal: murder,” one of those charged, Frederick Thomas, 73, of Cleveland, Ga., was recorded telling the informant.

“When it comes time to saving the Constitution, that means some people have got to die,” he said.

Another of the men, Samuel J. Crump, 68, of Toccoa, Ga., is accused of saying he wanted to make 10 pounds of ricin and disperse it in Atlanta and other cities, as well as loosing it from a car traveling on Interstate highways. Ricin, made from the castor bean, is a potent toxin, though it is not generally believed to be effective for killing large numbers of people.

The others arrested were Dan Roberts, 67, and Ray H. Adams, 65, both of Toccoa, the Justice Department said.

The United States attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, Sally Quillian Yates, said, “While many are focused on the threat posed by international violent extremists, this case demonstrates that we must also remain vigilant in protecting our country from citizens within our own borders who threaten our safety and security.”

Gosh, I wonder which sect of Christianity they belonged (to ) ?

Almost sounds like old school, retired KKK'ers with bouts of dementia and Alzheimer's .

It sucks getting old. Truly.

And the linked article says this was a "Christianist" group where?

"As Christianist, with its evocation of Islamist, gains wider usage as an attack word on what used to be called the religious right, another suffix is being used in counterattack to derogate those who denounce church influence in politics. ''The Catholic scholar George Weigel calls this phenomenon 'Christophobia,''' the columnist Anne Applebaum wrote in The Washington Post. She noted that he borrowed the word from the American legal scholar, J.H.H. Weiler. The word was used by Weigel ''after being struck by the European Union's fierce resistance to any mention of the continent's Christian origins in the draft versions of the new, and still unratified, European constitution."

"this case demonstrates that we must also remain vigilant in protecting our country from citizens within our own borders who threaten our safety and security."

This is kind of scary. Conspiracy to commit terror is way, way, waaaaaaaaay too easily pinned on citizens today.

I wonder if there's any real evidence in this case. From the article it sounds like a couple of old guys sitting around the table at McDonald's sipping on coffee and discussing what's going to be necessary to free this country from the grips of tyranny should it ever come to that. That is not illegal... although it's rapidly becoming so.

For those of you who think I'm crazy, consider this - meeting with your friends could land you in jail. "But slim, we don't do stuff like that." Sure. Fine. Maybe you don't. But, if we set the legal precedent to arrest and charge folks for doing nothing more than meeting and talking then we open ourselves up to allowing the government to arrest us for doing anything they deem undesirable.

What if you're not "in the party" and you meet up with your friends to talk opposition? Is it right the government can bag you and take you to Cuba? I know that's extreme but that's what we're setting ourselves up for.

Give the government the power to police it's citizens' very words and you'll pay dearly for it. It can't be said enough. Giving up liberty for security will get you neither and lose you both.

Are we really that worried about grandpa and his coffee buddies?

I'll agree with you on that, but not in this case, it seems quite obvious.

Slim, stop being a derp. The article is quite clear whent it states that the men were recorded, talking of their plans and ideals to kill federal judges

Stop the disingenuous ####### Slim. You can't get arrested for meeting with your friends. You can get arrested for meeting with your friends and discussing your terrorist plot to bomb and murder federal judges and employees to further your own political gains.

What if you're not "in the party" and you meet up with your friends to talk opposition? Is it right the government can bag you and take you to Cuba? I know that's extreme but that's what we're setting ourselves up for.

If your part of the conversation involves advocating the comission of a crime, in this case murder, then yes, you are a part of the conspiracy to commit a crime, and should be arrested.

Give the government the power to police it's citizens' very words and you'll pay dearly for it. It can't be said enough. Giving up liberty for security will get you neither and lose you both.

Slim, you are absurd. Sorry, you dont' have a right to plot a violent overthrow of the government. Murder is still a crime in this country. You should look into immigrating to Waziristan, no government restrictions, no government presence, and no restrictions on weapons, you could get your very own rocket launcher.

Are we really that worried about grandpa and his coffee buddies?

So does them being over 65 preclude them from knowing how to use a firearm? Just because they are over 65, does that mean that if they fire a gun, no bullets will come out, or magically they will turn into Werthers candy? I realize this is your demographic slim and you're sticking up for your people, but you are being ridiculous.

In just saying that quote right there, there is nothing wrong/nor illegal with it. As Slim said, if we are being arrested for stating something like that, then there is a HUGE issue with the power of this government and the things they can do.

On the flip-side, if someone says that and they've bought the chemicals, ammunition, have direct targets pointed out, etc.. then yeah, there's a bit more there that someone needs to try and put a stop to real quick.

I love stories like this though and anyone who is thwarted by an informant... These idiots would be successful if they'd just keep their damn mouths shut. They are so high on themselves though, that they can't help but brag about what they are going to do. It's amusing to watch their little plans fall apart.

The intial reporting by the Atlanta Journal Constitution provided the following:

The FBI affidavit noted that the agency's confidential informant, whose name was not disclosed, is out on bond for a pending state felony charge. The FBI gave the informant a polygraph test during the investigation of the militia group, and the informant gave "less than truthful responses" about the militia group's activities, the affidavit said.

I have not seen it in any subsequent report. You can bet their defense lawyer will pick up on it though. It is in the Oct commentary.

I agree, didn't that case on that other militia group (the one with the YOUTUBE vids) fall apart after the facts came out?

none of those quotes are damning evidence, they could have been "speculating" about what needs to take place.

Clearly if these guys were looking to do something, the Feds would have egged them into buying something illegal or whatever to make a real case..... they may infact have a real case, I'm not convinced yet.
