So, it looks like we will need FI's SSN to apply for a marriage license in MD. From the VJ SSN guide, it looks like we should wait 2 weeks after his arrival to apply, and then will need to wait at least another 2 weeks to get the card. Is that right, or is there anything we can do to get the number faster? He is arriving nov 15 and we had been aiming to get married dec 11 - I'm wondering whether we should rethink that. We want to get married before the holiday rush, and also to get him on my health insurance ASAP (just in case) and AOS so he can get his EAD...

would appreciate hearing others' experiences. Sorry if this is the wrong forum - I couldn't find an ssn forum

My state's website also said that both bride and groom need an SSN for a marriage license. However, we called, and they stated if someone is not a citizen of the US, they do not need a SSN to apply for a marriage license. All I was asked for was a copy of my birth certificate. They gave us our marriage license and also included the form to fill out for when I was ready to apply for my social security number in my married name.

I suggest calling the county clerk's office where you will be getting the marriage license and asking them. I'm sure they will tell you the same thing - the foreign citizen will not need one.

You need to call and check if that is correct!! even our state (Nebraska) does not require SSN for getting the license. All they said we needed was my birth certificate and passport.

In Virginia there is also a place for SSN, but they told us to leave her blank since she doesn't have one yet.

Agreed. My counties website stated it was needed but when I called it wasn't.
