Interview Question: When are you getting married?

Hi Vjers,

Here I come again for more solid advice from the best people in the world. :) I have read many reviews and one where the interview was just today. It seems that often they ask "When is the wedding" or "When are you getting married" My fiancee and I have a tentative date but we cannot plan it until I know I will be there for sure. Our interview came up fast (after waiting so long with no appts available) (it's this Friday!) - so as soon as I had a firm date I applied for health insurance. I require private insurance as he is self employed with his own policy. This is taking time with no answers yet and I have a feeling it may be a while. Ours will be a small wedding - he and I and my sister and her husband so little planning is required. We will make plans for the big day once I know I am going for sure and when two main things are in place (when I receive the Visa in hand and health insurance is finalized).

So my question is - how do I answer this? I don't want to say "we don't know" - that doesn't sound great. But the fact is, we really don't know. What we do know is we are doing everything in our power right now to get me down there ASAP and both of us have been diligently working toward this. We also know that we will be getting married within 90 days of me coming there.

So if anyone else has experienced the same where they didn't have a firm date at the interview - then please let me know how you phrased this.

Thanks everyone,

" as soon as I get to the USA and can get the marriage license and wait any required waiting times for the state "

Not sure why you wouldn't just give them your tentative date that you picked out. Its a pretty simple question.

You could even say " as soon as I get to the USA and have the wedding plans sorted out within the 90days "

Its not a trick question! the only trick question is when they ask you about working in the USA. You have to make sure that you say when you have your EAD or green card.

Your I-129f was approved in 5 days from your NOA1 date.

Your interview took 67 days from your I-129F NOA1 date.

AOS was approved in 2 months and 8 days without interview.

ROC was approved in 3 months and 2 days without interview.

Thanks Inky. I'll go with your latter suggestion..........once I get to the USA. I know it's not a trick question but reading reviews it appears to me that they are expecting you to have a date - almost to prove your relationship is real - I was just worried that's all. thanks

Nobody ever asked me when I was getting married. I didn't have a date picked out, but I would've simply said what Inky suggested. They want to make sure you know to do it within 90 days, if they do ask.

no, you're ok. Just say what you said to us! its not like a q n a, more like a conversation you have with them. I didn't have a date either, and I just said "probably the end of September" and said that we weren't exactly sure but that we had been talking to a JP to set it up. They just want to know that you are intending to get married basically, and that you understand that you have to or leave. Don't worry! you'll be ok.

Thanks Gabbi. Your explanation was very helpful. The reviews made it sound like you had to have definitive answers, so your post cleared that up.

good luck! don't worry its very easy and you will be just fine! I was very nervous and paranoid I was going to be denied, even tho I have no reason to think that, and it was very casual! We talked about his kids, and even laughed a bit. :)

I wasn't asked this question during my interview in Manila consulate. But, if ever the Consul ask me, I would answer, "within 90 days after I arrived in the US, we cannot plan on a definite date since visa is not on hand yet" -- an honest answer is best I think. God bless & take care.

We're planning for a Tuesday, as the steak house we're using for the reception has a super discount.

Unsure of which Tuesday, of course, but we're guessing within 45 days after me crossing the border.

It's really hard, ya know, to make wedding arrangements from afar, but at least the phone rates from Canada to USA are really cheap.

We even did a tele-presence remote with a seamstress at the local Kinko's, she was trimming up my wedding dress.
