She takes in her birth certificate, marriage certificate and GC and gets it changed to her maiden name that way. If in doubt call the SSA 1800 number for assistance.

I am also confuse... are you the USC? Did your wife get her green card based on your marriage? Then her green card should be in her married name, not maiden name... if social security card is in married name.. that should be right... You should ask for the change of name on the green card with USCIS, not change of name on the social security card.

Her SS card is in her married name, but her Green Card is in her maiden name?

That's not good, as the Green Card is the document that trumps all others. It's easy to change a SS card based on the Green Card, but it's not possible to change a Green Card based on the SS card. Looks like she gave her maiden name to USCIS when applying for AoS, hence the problem. What she will have to do is spend $450 on a new Green Card. The form for this is I-90.

Does she have a driver's license? If so, if her driver's license and her SS card are in the same name (her married name), and the SS card is clear, meaning it does not have the "Valid for work with DHS authorization only," then her driver's license and her SS card is all she needs for job purposes.

Google I-9 form, 'cause that's the form she will have to fill out after getting hired, and check the accepted documents. The driver's license is on List B and the SS card on List C. That's all she needs. No Green Card needed.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

This is not a really big problem as she never has to show her SSC to anybody. Check the I-9 form and the List A documents has the GC. So use that name as her legal name. Which name does she want to use--maiden or married. If she wants to use married and the GC is in the maiden name, wait until ROC to do the name change as it will cost you money (and dealing with the USCIS again) to have the name changed on the GC,

For example: my Mother had on her SSC first name middle name married name. She went by middle name maiden name married name her entire adult married life. It was never a problem until she filed for social security and then she had to change everything to first name middle name married name. As long as the SSN is valid and you can rattle it off, no one ever demands to see the card. The may ask and I simply reply that I do not carry it. I use my passport for the I-9 form for employers.

Take your time to decide which is the best course of action and which names she wants to use. My wife is using her maiden name so the GC and passport match (except her country does not use middle initial and the US does) and we get the tickets issued in her maiden name.

Good luck,

Dave

There is no REQUIREMENT to change your name. The OP has stated that they want the SSN in maiden name, therefore the choice is not to change to married name.

He states they WANT maiden name. So no need to change the GC. They're asking why the SSA won't allow them to change the SSN to maiden (like the GC).
