I'l see people eating food and drinking pops, juice...whatever while their shopping and it's always p*ssed me off. Wrappers and food falling on the floor shouldn't be the norm for people coming to purchase their grocery's. They can have some class and wait until they get out of the store to start chomping.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

If it is OK for this couple to be treated this way then I want those store managers charged and perp-walked whenever something they have sold is not as represented! If it is not relevant that it was inadvertent for this couple then it is equally irrelevant if the store manager didn't intend that the package was not full, the food was spoiled or otherwise defective, whatever. Yes, I think they should sue Safeway!

I think it's gross to eat and shop, even more so to do it before you pay for the items....but the mgr took this wayyyy too far.

Everyone should just go to their corners and forget this while thing ever happened.

My point was trying to understand why you were comparing an inadvertent lawbreaker to a deliberate one. It's really the same thing to forget to pay for a $5 item in a grocery store that you've just spent $50 in as it is for a guy to walk in, shove a sandwich under his shirt, and run back out?

IDK if it was inadvertent or not. That's why they have a court date. They just have to convince the judge of that. Obviously someone at Safeway didn't think it was inadvertent. The best way around this is don't "forget" to pay for something.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds it annoying.

Doesn't there have to be criminal intent in order for it to be theft?

Not necessarily.

Do you really believe that the government should be empowered to detain someone and separate them from their kids in these situations?

Nope.

I'm also not sure how Safeway had the power to do that. If I was those folks I would've walked right out. It could've escalated from shoplifting to assault (as I whooped the security guard and managers butts) but more than likely, they would've gotten shoved out of the way and just called the police again. More than likely though they wouldn't have done much at all.

The police didn't show up for 4 hours. Why did they sit there and wait?

The other fishy thing is the husband was charged too. He didn't eat the sandwich so how is he charged? Was he an accessory? What I see happening here is a big apology letter from Safeway with about $250 in free groceries followed by the couple making a statement, "We will not shop there anymore." No convictions, no sentencing, nothin. This'll be gone in a few days.

Is it annoying when a famished pregnant woman eats? How about when she feeds her starving kids?

Breastfeeding probably bothers folks too.

Well, there were two sandwiches, so I assume she didn't eat both herself.

As to the 'famished pregnant woman eating' theory...i think you're going OTT. if a pregnant woman was 'famished', her husband could have gone and paid for the freaking sandwiches, and she could have eaten it before they started to shop. Let's not tangent off that anyone has a problem with preggo women eating.

Sit down, eat your food like a civilized person, instead of eating a sub with one hand and shopping with the other. You can drop food, you can get condiments on the cart, or products on the shelves....it's disgusting no matter who does it.

And just by the by, as a mother who nursed a child...that doesn't make it my right to whip out my breast anytime I felt like it. Pooping is just as 'natural'...and just as vital to life, but you won't see me taking a dump in the middle of a store. But this is just by the by, and not relevant to the topic anyway....

If you wanna eat and shop, go to Costco during sample day.

Isn't that why so many stores (including supermarkets such as chop#### Safeway) have in-store eateries--most oft WITH place to sit down (or sand if these are full-to-brim)?....
What was wrong with just letting them pay the $5 after they found out? Incredibly ridiculous, IMO.
The store in question was a Safeway--not exactly known for sanity.

I'm pretty sure she won't die if she waits a few minutes to purchase her groceries and leaves the store before eating. It's a grocery store, not a restaurant.
