Hi,

I'm just wondering if anyone can clear something up for me.

My fiancée and I are looking to get married 5 days after I move to the US on a K1 Visa(as this is the only time my parents can make it over). However, I've read that getting a SS Number can take a 2 week wait + another week to get to you.

Do I need my SS Number to apply for a marriage license in Illinois, or can I get the license without it?

Neither of us will be changing our surname if that makes a difference.

I've been reading old posts regarding this issue and some people seem to think getting married before getting the SS card will make getting one a lot harder - can anyone clear this up for me?

From what I've read I'm worried I have a choice of getting married and having massive issues getting a SS Card, or having my parents miss my wedding.

Thanks for any help!

Check with the county doubt you need it to get the marriage license.

Only thing needed for us was birth certificate and passport. We had to follow the waiting period time which was 24 hours before we could marry after getting the license.

Ooo where in Illinois will you be??

Shouldn't need a SSN for the marriage.

I woudln't worry about the SSN. You should still be able to be added to bank accounts (I could), and if you can't get it (you should be able to but in case you can't...) when you get your EAD you can get one then.

Congrats on your pending nuptials!

Any idea how a tourist couple that flies in from Rome or Paris or Madrid and wants to get married in Las Vegas or Maui or Miami or New York would get SSNs?

Me neither.

So does that mean that the tens of thousands of tourists who get married every year in the United States get married without having a SSN?

Does that answer your question?

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Yeah I figured we probably could get married, I just worried that it made getting a SS Card more difficult. I'm getting my fiancee to call the courthouse clerk today to check it's all ok.

It depends on the state and/or on the county you're going to get married in. Seriously.

When we went to get our marriage license, I forgot my SS card at home and I didn't remember my SSN. The clerk at the court house said that she couldn't do anything without both of our SS numbers. My husband asked: "Does it matter that she isn't a citizen?" It didn't mean anything, we still had to go back and get my SSN (we're in Maryland).

The best advice so far was to check your county requirements.

I never mention this, but it's true: never marry in Maryland.

They are indeed the exception to the rule. Thinking about it, is there any reason to ever do anything in Maryland? Do they even have beaches there?

I wonder if the only reason they allow K1 holders to get a ssn before an ead or green card is because some states did/do require a ssn to get married. This would explain why the ss office has K1 holders as "work authorized" because they need something in their system to allow them to issue one.

It's the awesomest state with plenty of beaches, mountains and it's right next to the US Capital. It's all off top though.

But if we go back to topic, there always might be other exceptions.
