granted i understand why they'd want proof of citizenship for my co-sponsor, but the instructions for Form I-864A never request it.

also totally bummed i couldnt have gotten a letter from them prior to my interview requesting his birth certificate etc.

Nope, in the instructions for the I-864 (or I-134) it does not mention that you need proof your sponsor is a US Citizen. I found it posted here on the help forums. I immediately emailed my co-sponsor (my sister) and told her I needed her and her husband's birth certificates ASAP. Good thing too, because she can't find hers and had to send off to get it (we haven't had our NOA2 yet). As silly as I think it is, because my sister is an attorney for the Government, I understand why they need it.

I think I now know way more about my sister and brother in-law than I ever wanted to lol.

I'm so thankful for this site. There would have been no other way to do this by ourselves.

Co-sponsors do not sign an I-864A. The I-864A is for a qualifying household member of the sponsor. There is no requirement that a qualifying household member be a US citizen or LPR. In some cases, the intending immigrant themselves can sign an I-864A.

The IO may have made a mistake, but you're still better off giving them what they ask for.

It's true, but It seems like many Adjudicators are not aware of that. I got an RFE on my I-485 for the exact same reason (I-864A household member immigration status)
