Did anyone else have to have the Pneumococcal vaccine? It's listed on Packet 3, on the K-1 visa but my doctor says it's only for children/older adults/people at risk. I fall into none of the above categories. My doctor says if I need it she'll give it to me no problem, but only if it's necessary. I'd rather get it done through her and my health insurance (which covers it) than at the medical in Toronto.

The packet 3 says only "medically appropriate" vaccines are necessary. Did anyone else need to get the Pneumococcal vaccine for the K-1?

Did you not have that vaccination when you were a kid?

I would suggest getting a titre test done if your not sure of your vaccinations or lost records.

Pneumococcal disease is a type of pneumonia. So unless you are very old, very young or have a medical problem, like Asthma, or you live with a person that has a lung disease, you do not need the the Pneumococcal vaccine.

It won't show up in titers because I never had it as as child.

I know for the Vancouver medical, the vaccines are broken down by age: http://www.wokingmedical.com/Vaccinations.html if that helps.

This helped immensely, it sounds like no Pneumococcal for me as it's going to be "medically inappropriate" for me to receive it. Thanks everyone!

For young kids OR the mature adult (usually 65 and older) but their are other considerations for it

http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd-vac/pneumo/default.htm

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Yeah I was wondering about that too. What about the other ones like Meningococcal, Rotavirus, and Hib? I never got those.

I know that Hib vaccine are for infants, so it's not likely that I would need to get that, right? Same with Rotavirus.

What I'm really concerned about is, the Meningococcal vaccine. I don't really wanna get that one, I mean I'm not in that age group that would be at risk, am I? (I'm going to be 26 on Monday)

The only one I know I would have to get is my flu shot, which I don't want to get , but whatever.

You get immunizations based on your AGE.

19-26 YEARS

BOOSTERS

Tdap (Adacel or Boosterix) - ensure you get Tdap not just Td

MMR Measles, Mumps, Rubella. ("MR" and "MM" are not enough). You need MMR

Proof of Disease

Varicella - If you had "Chicken Pox" disease, no vaccine is needed, if you were born before 1980 you can orally declare you had chicken pox, know what age and year.

Vaccines

Influenza (only required during October - February, annually)

Pneumococcal only required for children and the elderly or people with lung disease

ROTA Virus only for children and the elderly

HIB infants are immunized in the US

HEP B not required, but now if you wish to attend any public university/community college it's required in the US. Infants in the US are now immunized.

I don't know for sure about Meningococcal, but I'm getting it anyways. It's recommended for my age group (I'm 23), my doctor was strongly suggesting it, work is covering it and it was on the list, it was a no brainer to just get it. I'm not 100% sure I need it since it is not listed in the vaccinations list from the panel physician's website but it can't hurt. I can't give you a firm answer, on that, sorry. I was told Rotavirus wasn't necessary and I had HIB as a child but it sounds like it's not necessary.

Oh that's good to know, I'm going there too.

I've had chicken pox but I wasn't born before 1980, do they test for that at the medical? or do you have to do that prior to your medical?

Since you're in the 18-64 age range, you can simply give a verbal declaration that you've had chicken pox. It says so right in Rayoflight's link. That's what I did at my medical and it wasn't a problem.

Meningococcal is required for 11-18 year olds for the medical exam, so you don't have to get it, although if you can get it for free you might as well because meningitis sucks and you won't be getting many free vaccines in the USA. I got my meningitis vaccine while I was in high school. It wasn't required but I got it anyway :P
