Hello, just found this regional forum! Awesome. "Howdy" to everybody.

I have a question. My fiance needs to obtain a police record from Egypt, but he now lives in Canada. We've followed the procedure and (thankfully) started early, but it's getting close to the time we will need it.

Do you have any thoughts on this situation? He's afraid that the folks who normally take care of this type of request are involved in protesting/negotiations for higher pay.

To request a police record remotely, he had to:

1. contact the Egyptian embassy in Canada to request the fingerprint document

2. take the document to his local Canadian police station to get fingerprinted

3. the Canadian police station mailed it to the embassy

4. the embassy mailed it to Egypt's Department of the Interior. They said it would take a month and a half.

It's been over two months, and I am starting to get nervous that we will have to wait until we can afford to fly to Cairo to visit his parents in order to obtain the police record.

The Dept of Interior is an absolute mess right now, you can not even imagine. I would try to make some phone calls or can his parents make inquiry on his behalf? Does your husband have any contacts in egypt? I wish you get it soon. I will ask my husband more tomorrow and try to see what more he says to me but i am pretty sure this is same agency we had a recent "run in" with. I'll update you soon if someone else don't reach you first. Sorry!!

We have no experience with the Egyptian embassy in Canada, however, I don't think it's by any mean better than the Egyptian embassy in the U.S. which we have a lot of sad stories with. Here is what I would do. You go back to the egyptian embassy and ask them for a new form and have them take your husband's finger prints again and stamp it with the embassy seal. Then, YOU or YOUR HUSBAND NOT THE EMBASSY send it back to his family in Egypt who should take it to the Ministry of Interior's office in Abbasseya, Cairo. They'll check your husband's prints and stamp it. That should take from 24 to 48 hrs. Then have his family send it back to you again. The whole process could take a week or less depending on how you will send and receive the form. I just did the same exact process 2 months ago it took me only 5 days. Hope this helps

Thanks to you, Om&Abo Malik and CamiandAmr.

His parents and two of his sisters are still in Egypt, so that is an option.

CamiandAmr, how did you get them to let you keep the paper? They seemed to insist on returning directly to the embassy... maybe because that was the Canadian police doing the fingerprinting? Sounds like we might need to make a trip to the Egyptian embassy in Canada, then. Thanks for the idea!!

Please do keep me posted if you have any other thoughts. Thanks again for your time!

Yes, i spoke with my husband and it is the same office we just had to deal with trying to obtain an exit stamp (tourist stamp) he had to pull some strings to get it to us through friends in high places..he said their is chaos in there and that it would have taken us 2 months just to get the stamp and he said the certificate you requested is only good for 3 months. Maybe it calmed down in their since then but it was quite an ordeal and he said there was a lot of commotion from others in there who had been waiting weeks and been stuck in egypt not able to leave. our queue number was 37000.

you might want to try to see what the atmosphere is like now. inshallah it will be ok.sorry but we don't live in cairo so there is no way to know if things have gotten any better in there but my husband said its likely your certificate may be close to expiring or expired(i hope he is wrong) maybe they were clever enough to post date it

good luck maybe what cami says may be better and maybe it is ok there now and you can get it fast

ok more, he says the problems was there was protesting there at the time. He did say that it is only good for 3 months. I am not sure if you will be able to mail the stuff to family either. can the embassy there help you to obtain it?

Thanks so much for asking him for me! That is really too kind of you. It's so very much appreciated.

Yes, we have been working with the Egyptian embassy in Canada, but the conversation has gone more like:

"Did you send it? Well, since you sent it, we received it. And since we received it, we sent it to the Canadian embassy in Egypt. (not right, btw). And then they sent it to the Department of Interior."

(The DOI told us the Canadian embassy would send it directly to them.)

Thanks so much for the information on expiration date. I have been complaining to him that we should have started this sooner, but apparently not! With that expiration date, starting sooner probably wouldn't have helped us. So, I will promise to stop complaining. ;) He will owe you thanks for that! Hahah.

Thank you both again. I'll pass along this info and report back what happens, in case anyone else has the same problem.

Best!

Amy

Well, i hope this all works out for you this is such a hard thing without all the delays, i know. Cami's ideal seems the fastest way if they let you do it that way. My husband says he don't think so but what i've learned anything goes in egypt nowadays.

it would not matter when you started things its going to be 3 mos from time they print it. Hopefully you can find out something soon.
