International Wire Money Transfer

All,

Which of these methods are safe to transfer around £25,000?

What kind of charges can I expect for this amount?

I'm thinking of just getting an International Bankers' Draft from my Barclays branch and pay it into my wife's US account.

Thanks,

sanc

When I transferred money from thre UK to the US I used a company I used to work for, www.moneycorp.com you have to jump through a few hoops with them it's best for you to set up an account before you move from the UK, as you have to fill out a bit of paperwork and they have to recieve the originals in person before they can transfer the money for you. But they do have a Florida office, if you're already in the US and want to transfer cash over from the UK.

While it may seem like a bit of work to get the account set up, it's due to anti-money laundering procedures and any place that you try and transfer £25K from will go through that with you.

Anyway, once the account is set up you can transfer money with a quick phone call and it goes through in a few days. The best thing about Moneycorp though, is that you'll get a really good exchange rate, so I think it's worth it, especially if you're transferring £25k.

If you're transferring money from the US to other parts of the world. Check out www.atmcash.com, when using a checking account it's only $5 up to $1,000. They'll FedEx a re-loadable ATM card for free in most countries (discounted in some). This is a lot cheaper than Western Union, Money Gram, etc.

If you use this link and use the promo code "5off" (in the payment page), you're first transfer will be free when using a checking account http://bit.ly/visajourney

I belive XE.com also provide a wiring service (I know i use their caluclator thingy for working out how much in $ prices £ things are, lol)

I've just this service www.xetrade.com which normally gives good exchange rates (so far I've only done GBP to Euro and GBP to USD) and if you use EFT to transfer the funds there aren't any fees. You'd normally be set up with a limit of around 4-5K I think but can request your "credit limit" to be changed to something higher. It takes a little bit to set up as you need to send them proof of identity etc but once that's done transfers are reasonably quick (took me about 2 days until money showed in my US account from booking the transfer and making the "payment" from my lloyds account).

I've done a lot of research into this and the best option (for me, anyway) is HiFX. Their rates were the best for what I sent, and the minimum is £250, though the rate is slightly better for sending more than that amount. The process was very streamlined and they incorporated no charges at all. Soemtimes the receiving bank will levy a charge for incoming money (mine did but it was only $7)

My fiance sends me money via paypal, he sends me it in USD and I simply accept and turn it into GBP's. Then withdraw it, sending it to my account takes around 3 days to complete :)

Paypal has so far been THE cheapest, Western Unions charges are a mockery.

Very interesting will look into this one

Thanks

I've used Western Union - not THAT much actually... :)

And as for the PayPal thing...here...you're talking to the PayPal "woman" now - clever thing to do is this:

Get one PayPal account set up as a business or premier acocunt (premier is fine). That means you can upload or transfer funds in the normal way, and also accept credit card payments. Now what you do NOT want to do when transferring internationally is send funds straight from one card, throguh a PayPal account, to another account - this would put a charge on the receiving account, because that would be receiving money from a credit card..so here's how to avoid that:

Create your original account. Verify it (see PayPal website). Make it premier if you like...

Create the receiving account. Verify it. DO NOT make it premier - no need. You can only accept payments directly from money uploaded into someone else's PayPal account this way - no charges to accept that, at all.

UPLOAD money from your card or bank account into the original PayPal account. Say $100. Hey presto, it appears a few days later. Then, transfer the uploaded funds available on your original acct across to acct # 2, no charges at all.

Download the money into the acct # 2 bank account, and that doesn't cost any money either.

Hey presto - LOW fees, if any :)

Email me if that makes NO sense whatsoever :D :D

I send cash in the mail. Also sent her a credit card to use as needed. Worst case, have them open an account in the UK at a bank you have in the US like Chase and do an internal transfer. You can also transfer/wire money to any bank worldwide, it just sucks to pay $30 to transfer $50.
