Long story short..

I have a green card (2year conditional expires 2013), EAD(expiring feb 2012), social security card with "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION"

-

I recently got a new job and I was reviewing the I-9 form where you have to show some documents(to work).

I realized that my EAD was expiring soon and that I will need as a proof (for my social security card) so I decided to renew it --- I KNOW!! I MESSED UP BECAUSE I ALREADY HAVE A GREEN CARD!! so anyways I sent some papers to USCIS to renew my EAD (I-765) I checked the renew box on the form and also stated that I was a permanent resident (also attached a copy of my green card) -- somehow I screw everything to the point that I sent my application to Chicago (wrong place to send the application anyways). My question is will USCIS automatically decline my application and send everything back or I should try to contact somebody and USCIS and have them withdraw my I-765app? will this affect my immigration process in the future?

Thanks

Uhhh correct me if I am wrong here others of the VJ world but it is my understanding that your green card status IS your EAD. That an EAD is for Visa holders only but being that you are a green card carrying resident of the US you are eligible for work and your EAD is no longer needed or required. Someone else back me up here. Am I off the mark??

When I was in the process of adjusting status (I-485) I also submitted the form (I-765 EAD) so I could work while my case was being process. So I receive and EAD (card totally different from my Green card). weeks later I got my green card (At this point the EAD becomes garbage) my mistake was applying for the I-765 again. Because I never changed my social security card to an unrestricted one. So I landed this amazing job... thats when I started panicking... and it slipped my mind I didnt need to re-apply for I-765(EAD) but rather just go to the social security office and have them remove "the work only with dhs authorization" ...

Should I send a letter to USCIS saying I messed up and I would like to withdraw my I-765 app because I dont need it?

OP already said in the original post it was a mistake to apply for a renewed EAD card.

Don't bother writing a letter OP. Call them and speak to an operator.

I would imagine you dont need to do anything seeing as the application was declined (probably due to the fact that it wasnt needed maybe?) and returned to you. I am going to assume it is case closed and you dont have to do anything but worry about ROC in 2013 :) Glad you landed an amazing job btw, my husband just got his EAD approval and is trying to find work now, not an easy task in this economy! Hopefully things pan out soon though fingers crossed :star:

Try to withdraw it. Otherwise, they'll deny it and keep your money.

BTW, you don't have to get your Social Security card updated. That's optional. Your green card is the "DHS Authorization" mentioned on the card.

For work and I-9 purposes, you have the choice which documents to present. You can present on List A document or, alternatively, one List B document and one List C document.

So you can choose to either show your Green Card, and that covers everything: who you are and that you are authorized to work, or, alternatively to your choosing, you can present your driver's license and your unrestricted SS card.

Hence, nobody really needs to show their Green Card when applying to work, as long as they have an unrestricted SS card. For that reason most people get themselves such a SS card as soon as they are Green Card holders. As Jim said, it's optional, as you can show your Green Card and are covered as well.

Your choice and your choice only.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

You do not even need to get work authorization line removed.

Your existing SSN card in conjunction with your GC would work perfectly fine.

Your GC overrides the work authorization required line. :)

It costs nothing. Just go to the Social Security office with your green card and fill out the form for a replacement card. It doesn't make any difference in your eligibility to work, but it does make meeting the I-9 document requirements a little easier.
