In New Hampshire, where Huntsman moved his campaign headquarters a few weeks ago and where he spends most of his time, he's polling at less than 5 percent.

New Hampshire residents aren't even donating to his campaign. In the last quarter, Huntsman's campaign reported just two donors in the entire state who gave a combined $1,000.

Gary Johnson, the little-known libertarian former governor of New Mexico, raised 10 times that amount in the state.

When I asked what gives--he has held more than 80 events throughout the state--Huntsman gave a surprising answer. He said he was shocked at the $1,000 in donations ... because it was so high.

"I was surprised by it because we haven't had a single fund-raiser in New Hampshire," he said. "We haven't had a financial focus on New Hampshire. It hasn't been a center for fundraising for us. It's been a primary process that we take extremely seriously. One that we have developed a strategy around. Fundraising happens elsewhere. So if we were to do a fundraiser in New Hampshire we'd pull in more, no doubt about that."

"So fund-raising numbers in New Hampshire shouldn't be looked to as a metric for support?" I asked.

"Absolutely not," he said.

OK, but what about the low poll numbers? Mitt Romney, who just nabbed a plum endorsement from former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu, is killing it in the state at 40 percent.

"We were at zero not long ago," Huntsman said. "And we went from zero to 10 in a recent poll. And then eight in the most recent WMUR poll, twice now. And you're going to see that bump up to 12, 15, 20, it's no doubt. With a little air cover--advertisements on the air which we'll inevitably have, we'll be up to where we're being taken very seriously." He went on to say, "What you're seeing is the beginning of the rise. When you rise in New Hampshire, you rise very quickly."

Huntsman is one of the very few GOP primary candidates that hasn't made a complete ####### out of himself by now.

Which means he has no shot in that race.

And he has no shot in the general election because people like you who admire his more "centrist"..... will vote for Democrat no matter what.

I absolutely would vote Hunstman if he was the GOP nominee. His track record as Governor of Utah is solid and he's not a scary RWNJ.

Agree too. I can't tell you now definitely who I'd vote for in Obama v. Huntsman matchup, but I would seriously consider both and could very likely see myself voting for Huntsman in the general election. And I say this as a (self-described) moderate, centrist registered Democrat who has voted on occasion for a Republicans when I think he's the better candidate (e.g. I voted for Tom Campbell (R ) for Senate in California in 2000).

If AJ, Big Dog and I are in any way representative of centrist voters in this country, the biggest fear Obama has would be a Huntsman candidacy. The thing he most wishes for is that one of the nuts actually wins the GOP nomination. I define 'nuts' as anyone other than {Romney, Huntsman}.

Seems like these -more moderate, candidates always should win but so often don't, I don't care if it McCain, Dole or even Ford.

By the time the opposition shock troops are done with the guy, enough people (in the end) just go ahead and vote for the Democrat rather than the Democrat-lite and the conservatives sit it out.

There aren't enough Herman Cain type conservatives in the country to give that guy a fighting chance.

There aren't enough Herman Cain type conservatives in the country to give that guy a fighting chance.

Often events have as much to do with who the country is willing to elect as who the candidate is.

At this stage in the last election, no one gave Obama any credible odds of getting elected, most concluded he was running to build for a later, more serious run at the white house.

Bill clinton was another long shot which due to events (and his campaigning skills) got him the job.

Sometimes it appears as if you can't separate your goals from your ability to honestly asses these topics,

Cain is a bit of a long shot.... but not that long considering todays climate.
