I work in oil, so I've lived in the oil cities of Houston (Texas), Oklahoma City (Oklahoma), and New Orleans (Louisiana).

AT&T: Great in all three

T-Mobile: Fine in Oklahoma City; no reception inside any building in New Orleans

Verizon: In Oklahoma: my company switched to Verizon and switched back to AT&T three months later because Verizon was terrible for remote coverage

Here's my experience from Houston:

Sprint = Contract for 2 years, coverage okay, dropped calls often, when you cancel, they'll charge you until you cancel the credit card (I was billed MONTHS after cancelling in person AND in writing AND on the phone) I traveled to KC, Mo and had to stop on top of overpasses to make or get calls. That is the Sprint-Capitol. I was so disgusted that I cancelled the service while on vacation.

Cingular = (Bought out by someone else) No dropped calls ever but I lived on a nearby island and was always getting offshore charges that had to be dealt with. (The mainland was visible from the island, it's not like we were in Hawaii)

T-mobile = Charges increase, you are charged for every little thing, promises of free or replacement phones are not honored, Contract - 2 years, dropped calls sometimes, several dead zones in downtown areas. For 2 phones with unlimited minutes and no texting or data, we were charged 140U$. Cancelled 4 months ago.

My niece has Verizon and uses it almost all over the world, but she says it is NOT economical at all.She likes it because she doesn't have dropped calls.

Now I have Boost--it's 50U$/mth for unlimited text, calling, and data plus for 5U$ more, I can call Mexico and Canada and text everywhere. Plus, every 6 months that you pay on time means you get 5U$ off every month down to 35$/month. No contracts. I have been very pleased with the coverage and quality.

A family member in Georgia loves them also.

A friend is a service tech for Boost and has this tip: If you can transfer your data (phone numbers) via a chip versus a phone that requires you to type it in, the one that you type in gets better range of service. He explained why, but I can't remember. His recommendation was to chose that when you have the option.

When you get where you are going, ask your coworkers, they'll prolly know best for your new area. Good luck.

Verizon or AT&T. They both have nationwide coverage just about any where in the country. Verizon is more expensive than AT&T but they have spots that roam and are considered dead spots. (the southern half of Kentucky is one place that comes to mind) AT&T will work just about any where but has crappy customer service.

Verizon has the best coverage by far compared to AT&T. Check their coverage map. AT&T itself doesn't dispute that Verizon's coverage is better than theirs, so they like to play on the "better phones" thing. That was back when they were the only ones with iPhones... what's the point in having the "best phone" if you can't get a signal?

My husband and I both have Droid Incredible 2's. We have unlimited data, unlimited texts, 700 minutes (we'd go lower if we could, we don't use all those) and international calls for $150 a month.

How is it working so far for you? We just switched to Simple Mobile and so far we haven't had any problems, except for their customer service (long wait). I hope I'm not jinxing myself. I love using GSM phones instead of CDMA, I like having the liberty of changing my phone whenever I please.

May you share your experience with AT&T, T-mobile, Verizon, or any others regarding Plans, extra prices, network coverage, customer service,...etc.

As well, if I relocated from NY to any oil states such as Texas, California, Gulf of Mexico, North Dacota,...what will be the coverage of each one?

Thanks

MetroPCS has a special right now 4 lines for $100!

That includes fees/taxes. And there are no contracts so you can cancel at any time.

$25 a pop, unlimited calling, texting, and web. Their cheapest phone is $29 with a $20 mail in rebate.

The phones work great, perfect reception, no dropped calls, but I will say their internet is not that fast.

Besides that, if you get a smart phone you have to pay $45 to $50 a month. You can get a really decent smart phone (Samsung) for $125...And their best phone is the LG Esteem which is $350 with a $100 mail-in rebate if you buy it very quickly (I think the rebate ends next week)....The $25/line only applies to non-smart phones..

We have a total of 5 lines. I have a 4G smart phone (LG Esteem)...Wife just got the $125 Samsung Android Smart Phone mentioned above....My brother has a regular phone....My mom has a regular phone, my dad has a regular phone. Total bill for all 5 is $175!

AT&T is currently in a number of lawsuits for promising service they couldn't deliver, bait and switch prices etc.

Oddly, their coverage is pretty good, but it's as though they still feel they need to trick you to get your patronage. They actually told me I was 'just confused and misinformed' about a rate that I agreed to for service, even though I was looking at a dated screen capture of the offer from their website. Just one example in a litany of 'oops, we *swear* we didn't mean to charge you for that....' moments.

Very unethical company.

AT&T's coverage in LA is beyond pathetic. Hubby and I had the same phone, brand new as of May 2011. We were dropping so many calls, AT&T said it had to be a phone defect, so we both had our antennas and batteries replaced. Still dropping calls. We got so angry with AT&T passing the blame off on us and HTC that they gave us a microcell tower to keep in our apartment. No more dropped calls, right? Wrong. If we move more than 15 feet from that tower (say I want to go in the bedroom while hubby is in the living room) call is dropped.

I'm stuck with them until May of 2013 when my contract ends and then I am RUNNING to Verizon.

Meh, that's why I hate contracts. We used to have really poor reception with Cricket, but now we're with Simple Mobile (Prepaid and runs on T-Mobile's network) and problem solved.

Good luck!

Nope, Verizon is lower by far. T-Mobile and AT&T will charge you from the moment you hit 'send' instead of from the moment the call is anwered. That's the #1 reason I switched. The second reason was that I had an iPhone and it's not a worldwide phone.

Yes, you can send text messages, you will see the missed calls with the proper number and you can call directly. All you have to do is enroll in the international program. They'll explain that. AND, the Droids have skype so instead calling straight from your phone, you can log into skype and make the call. It works exactly as if you call from your computer.

I agree with you mostly with everything, except the cost. I literally cut my bill in half when I switched from AT&T to Verizon. There again, I call Egypt and other countries everyday.

It would be difficult to be more wrong about the iPhone if you tried  Your problem is with VERIZON not being worldwide, not the iPhone.

Verizon works on a 1980's, backwards CDMA network. AT&T uses GSM, which is what everyone else on Planet Earth employs. Also, every iPhone has had Skype and Google Voice for ages, so there's no issue there. Place blame where it belongs. Verizon is the problem.

Back to the OP. If you're in Texas, and much of the Gulf, you're in AT&T's backyard. Verizon's coverage here can be pretty lame, that's why I ran from them as soon as my contract expired B-)

I'd take Verizon over AT&T any day. I've found very few spots that I couldn't get a signal (and in those places, NO provider had signal out there, lol). Customer service has always been excellent. My friends who have AT&T can't say the same - many of them have switched to Verizon, and most that have AT&T went over to their that solely because (at the time) AT&T was the only one with the iPhone...
