Here is a snapshot of how things work at LAX for new immigrants.

Your wife will go through immigration at LAX.

She will go collect her checked luggage.

She will exit into the unsecured area of the international terminal. (It's a tunnel where you'll see lots of anxious families waiting for someone.)

She will go outside to the domestic terminal located next door.

She will need to go through security and check her luggage for the domestic leg.

I Purchased a ticket for my fiancee and her POE will be at LAX and will have a connecting flight to houston but not after 11 hours. That means she will be staying there in california for a while before she travels to houston. Is it okay? or is there any problem? Please reply asap...need help....

Sounds like a normal international flight to me.

What you should have done Jag is try and get her a flight with a shorter over lay I only looked at flights that had 3 hour layover as I had to connect to Atlanta. Once she goes through customs which takes about 10 mins once she gets through the line depending on how many get offf that flight and how many planes are arriving at that one time. As stated it does not take 3 hours to go through customs. She then goes through and gets her bags and then her family can meet her outside as long as they get her back to the airport 1-2 hour before her flight. What airline is she flying to Houston with?

Lax is good and the CO's are very nice there I have flown in 3 times and never had a problem.

Divorced !st November 2012.

Married only 2 years 1 month

So she arrives at 7pm and completes customs by 10 pm. Not a lot of time between 10pm and 6am to leave the airport and go stay at relatives home and be back to the airport by 4:30am to make her flight by 6am. She also needs to consider the potential of getting caught in traffic in the morning.

I like what several suggested. You meet her there and stay at a hotel near the airport and catch flight in morning.

If money is an issue to meet her there, then it would be wiser for her to stay at airport. Relatives can meet her at airport. Because of the limited time, she should stay very close to airport.

The previous person is wrong about taking 10 minutes to get through customs. My wife came on a IR1 visa and it took her several hours to get through customs and imigrations. I really can't speak for K1 visa but it is probably the same process.

It won't be a problem but I would meet her at immigration and fly home together, they have a nice flower stand there. You will be a hero if you do. It will take about 3 hours at immigration.

Weird, considering I was done within 15 mins and my Poe was in California as well

Did you go through LAX? They're usually pretty slow.

Yep, with that timeline not worth leaving the Airport.

My total time on flight is 23 hrs...i spent 8 hrs in Doha qatar..i also spent 5 hrs in New York...there is no problem to your question...except the person mindset....will he/she be able to stand it. Nobody care about if you live in an airport.....in the name of waiting for your connecting flight.

3 hours?! I am looking at a connecting flight in Washington DC for my husband, but the layover is only 2 hours. So according to your statement, that is not enough time?

She will need to go through security and check her luggage for the domestic leg.

The snapshot is blurred. It leaves out the fact that she will want to take a luggage cart to put her things on & go thru customs before leaving the secured area.

The cart is important for several reasons. She can use it to transport her luggage inside the international terminal & to the domestic terminal.

Going thru immigration & customs can take awhile. There are several filghts that land at about the same time. Hundreds or thousands of people in the lines. Two to three hours could be spent there.

Once she walks up the ramp she will see the last check point which she simply walks by. After that she has to decide what she wants to do. It would be great if you could be there. If not she could find the second level of that terminal where there are some places to eat or just sit.

I assume she will use Southwest to Texas. She can take a shuttle bus by walking out the doors of the terminal & across the first drive area to the center waiting area. There are signs above indicating where to wait for the buses.

I would advise her to simply walk to Southwest. Its really not that far. Out the door of the international terminal, turn left, use walkway to terminal # 1 ( southwest ). Easy 10 minute walk. Walking allows her to keep the luggage cart. Using the bus doesnt.
